Overview

Payroll Officer – Location: Melton Mowbray (on-site); Contract: Full-time, permanent; Salary: Up to £32,000 per year (DOE); Sector: Reputable retail business.

The brief: Keep payroll accurate, compliant, and on time for a busy retail operation. If you're detail-driven, love clean reconciliations, and can calmly hit cut-offs in a high-volume setting, you'll fit right in.

Responsibilities
  • Run end-to-end UK payroll across weekly and monthly cycles (hourly and salaried staff).
  • Process starters/leavers, P45/P60, contractual changes, overtime, shift premiums, and allowances.
  • Calculate and process statutory payments (SSP, SMP, SPP, ShPP) and holiday pay for variable/irregular hours.
  • Manage time & attendance imports, chase/mend variances, and lock down approvals to deadlines.
  • Complete RTI submissions to HMRC; maintain PAYE/NIC, student loans, and attachment of earnings.
  • Handle pension auto-enrolment (assessments, opt-ins/outs, contributions) and liaise with providers.
  • Own payroll controls: reconciliations, payroll journals, and month-end packs for Finance.
  • Resolve employee and manager queries with clear, helpful communication.
  • Maintain GDPR-compliant records and support year-end (P60, P11D data gathering).
  • Spot process gaps and drive small, sensible improvements.
Qualifications
  • Solid, recent UK payroll experience.
  • Working knowledge of a mainstream payroll system (e.g., Sage, IRIS, SD Worx, ADP, iTrent) and confident Excel skills (lookups, pivots) is desirable.
  • Up-to-date grasp of payroll legislation, RTI, pensions auto-enrolment, and holiday pay rules for irregular hours.
  • Accuracy, discretion, and a can-do attitude under tight deadlines.
