Job summary

Nacro is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager in the UK to lead the payroll function and ensure staff are paid accurately, on time and in full compliance with UK legislation.

You will own the end-to-end payroll service and work with Finance, People & Organisational Development and our external provider to deliver a compliant, efficient payroll operation.

Qualifications

  • Significant experience managing end-to-end payroll within a medium or large organisation.
  • Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, including PAYE, NI, pensions.
  • Experience leading and developing a high-performing payroll team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the monthly payroll delivery, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Coach and develop the Payroll Team to deliver excellent service.
  • Ensure compliance with UK payroll legislation, pensions and reporting.
  • Manage payroll systems and drive improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Produce payroll reports and management information for business decisions.
  • Maintain robust financial controls and governance across payroll processes.
  • Provide expert payroll advice and guidance to managers and employees.

This role offers a starting salary within Nacro’s pay structure of £41,851with expected progression to £43,107 within the first year, subject to meeting clear criteria and performance standards, with further pay progression available in the future. About the Role

As Payroll Manager, you'll take ownership of the end-to-end payroll service, leading a dedicated payroll team to deliver an accurate, compliant and customer-focused payroll operation. Working closely with colleagues across Finance and People & Organisational Development, alongside our external payroll provider, you'll ensure payroll processes run smoothly while meeting all statutory and regulatory requirements.

You'll oversee payroll systems, pension administration, HMRC reporting, reconciliations and governance, whilst identifying opportunities to improve processes, strengthen controls and enhance the overall employee experience.

As our Payroll Manager you will lead, develop and support our Payroll, with including, but not limited to:
  • Leading the delivery of the monthly payroll, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time.
  • Managing, coaching and developing the Payroll Team to deliver an excellent service.
  • Ensuring compliance with UK payroll legislation, HMRC requirements, pensions and statutory reporting.
  • Managing payroll systems and driving improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Producing payroll reports, analysis and management information to support business decisions.
  • Maintaining robust financial controls, reconciliations and governance across payroll processes.
  • Providing expert payroll advice and guidance to managers and employees.
You’ll be someone who has:
  • Significant experience managing end-to-end payroll within a medium or large organisation.
  • Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, including PAYE, National Insurance, pensions and statutory payments.
  • Experience leading and developing a high-performing payroll team.
  • Strong payroll systems knowledge and experience of improving payroll processes.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and confidence working with payroll data and reporting.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

A payroll qualification (such as CIPP) and experience within the charity, housing or public sector would be advantageous but is not essential.
