Job summary

A healthcare organization in Reading is seeking an experienced catering supervisor to oversee meal service operations at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. This role involves ensuring high food safety standards, managing catering staff, and delivering exceptional patient service. Candidates should have a Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate and experience in a catering or healthcare environment. The position offers a full-time contract with a salary between £24,937 and £26,598, depending on qualifications and experience.

Job description

To supervise and support the operations of The Patient Services side, and wider catering services if necessary at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. This includes ensuring the efficient serving of meals, upholding high food safety standards and accurate record keeping.

The role contributes to the production of approximately 1,600 patient meals daily, serving around 700 customers in the restaurant, and delivering 13,000 hospitality covers annually.

The post holder will deliver Patient food to high standards, maintain a clean and safe working environment and directly supervise Catering assistants and support maintaining patients feeding.

A key part of the role is to ensure excellent service delivery to all patients and customers while supporting the department in meeting departmental targets.

Main duties of the job
  • Supervise all aspects of Catering staff & food production.
  • Support preparing and cooking meals in line with food hygiene, health and safety regulations, and dietary requirements.
  • Oversee food service operations, maintaining high standards of portion control, food presentation and patients satisfaction.
  • Ensure the correct and safe operation of catering equipment at all times, reporting faults promptly.
  • Ensure all catering equipment is thoroughly cleaned and safe to use before the start of the next shift.
  • Ensure that environmental cleaning of all service and production areas, including floors, surfaces and equipment is carried out in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally both verbally and by telephone.
  • Take responsibility for supervising the department in the absence of the designated person in charge.
  • Plan and organise own workload effectively, using initiative to manage day-to-day tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Record and report data on food service matters, including recipe usage, wastage, and feedback.
  • Follow standardised planning to ensure consistency, quality, and cost-effective use of resources.
  • Maintain accurate records in line with departmental and Trust requirements.
