Job description
Overview

The key focus of the role is building relationships with young people and involving them in shaping, designing, planning and delivering Youth work activities in Chard. The post is part of the Community Youth Project, an independent Charitable Incorporated Organisation in South Somerset, and the Youth Support Worker reports to the Community Youth Project manager.

Responsibilities
  • Work as an effective team member with the youth worker in delivering youth work provision activities that are fun, educative and support personal and social development.
  • Support the youth worker in delivering outreach work in the community as required.
  • Deliver regular weekly centre-based sessions (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings).
  • Build effective relationships with young people aged 8–17 years, providing social and personal development opportunities that complement their formal education and other experiences.
  • Actively listen to young people, support informed decision making, and enable participation in decisions that affect them.
  • Assist in maintaining records including attendance forms, session monitoring forms, parental consent forms, incident/accident/Safeguarding forms, and contribute to written reports on attendance, achievements, outcomes, progress and development (3 per year).
  • Support young helpers during face-to-face sessions to help them develop skills and confidence.
  • Assist in ensuring sessions are fun, safe, welcoming, well planned and well resourced, providing activities that engage young people.
  • Implement Safer Working Practices.
  • Adhere to and implement youth work delivery in accordance with policies and procedures that meet statutory requirements and best practice guidance, including Safeguarding, Equality and Diversity and Data Protection.
  • Attend Community Youth Project Team meetings (via Zoom) and monthly supervision with the Project Manager.
  • Attend induction meetings with the Project Manager and complete First Aid (Qualified) training in person, Safeguarding level 2 training, and Food Hygiene and Safety level 2 (online) within the first two months of employment.
About the Organization and Reporting

The Community Youth Project is an independent Charitable Incorporated Organisation providing youth work services to communities within South Somerset. The organisation is run by Trustees and a Management Group; employees are supported by a paid part-time Project Manager. The Youth Support Worker will be line managed by the Community Youth Project Manager. The project aims to increase the quality and range of opportunities for young people across communities and will work closely with the Youth Worker, Community Youth Project Manager and the delivery Community Management Committee.

Personal and Professional Development

The post holder is expected to commit to ongoing personal development for current and future role requirements, regular supervision, annual appraisal, and uptake of in-service training opportunities.

Problem Solving and Decision Making

The post holder will implement CYP policies and procedures and contribute to the annual Service Level Agreement. The role requires a creative approach to developing and delivering opportunities for young people, including determining mechanisms to facilitate engagement and successful delivery.

Working Environment

Youth Centre and community-based work as required; regular evening youth sessions; regular attendance at staff meetings and professional supervision; considerable unsociable hours, evenings and weekends; some outdoor work.

Terms and Conditions
  • The rate of pay is £12.21 per hour.
  • We are ideally aiming to fill the post with two postholders working 9 hours per week, but we are open to flexible arrangements (e.g., three employees each working 6 hours per week).
  • The post is subject to satisfactory medical clearance and requires an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory completion of a six-month probationary period.
  • The work will involve evening and weekend commitments, and the post holder is required to deliver a regular series of evening sessions.
  • The annual leave entitlement is 5.6 weeks (pro-rata).
  • An appropriate travel allowance will be paid for legitimate travel other than home to work.
