Job summary

GCHQ invites applications for the Maths and Cryptography Internship in Cheltenham. You will join a nine-week paid placement working with fellow undergraduates on projects of real operational interest, supported by experts in maths and cryptography.

The role focuses on strengthening maths and programming skills through hands-on projects. The programme runs 21 June to 20 August 2027, is office-based with no remote work, and includes accommodation close to GCHQ paid in arrears.

Qualifications

• Currently studying for an undergraduate degree in mathematics (or equivalent) with at least two taught years completed by June 2027 and aiming for a 2:1.
• A-level maths grade A or equivalent.
• Previous programming experience is useful but not essential; training will be provided.

Responsibilities

• Work on projects of real operational interest to the organisation.
• Collaboratively conduct innovative mathematical/cryptographic research with mentors.
• Develop maths and cryptography skills through a structured training programme.
