Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist

Shropshire Community Health Trust's Children's Speech and Language Therapy Team provides community-based services for children in Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin, aged 0-18.

We are looking for a Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) to join our team for the next year to support a project funded by the Change Programme for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in Shropshire Primary school hubs for children with additional needs. There will also be an opportunity to join one of the other clinical specialist SLT teams.

We offer good training opportunities with a strong emphasis on continuing professional development through appraisal and supervision. The successful applicant will be part of an enthusiastic and friendly team of children's therapists and assistants. Main duties of the job
  • To provide, as an autonomous practitioner, assessment, diagnosis and evidence-based treatment for service users within a specialist area and to liaise with and refer on to other health, education and social care providers as appropriate.
  • To work as a member of the community service within early years and/or specialist education settings, including contributing to their development.
  • To provide multidisciplinary functions within the post holder's sphere of competence to service users across these and mainstream education settings.
  • To develop the post holder's own professional practice by keeping up to date with clinical developments and responding to available evidence.
  • To provide specialist advice, education and training in the specialist area.

The Children's SLT team work closely within Children's Therapy Services with the Child Development Centres and Community Paediatrics, and also provide in-reaching services to the local acute wards.

Training and Qualifications
  • Holds recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree or equivalent.
  • Holds Health Professions Council licence to practice as a Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • Evidence of completion of relevant short course and continuing professional development.
Experience
  • Extensive experience at post-graduate level with a range of speech, language communication difficulties in children.
  • Significant experience of working with children and young people with a range of complex speech, language, and special educational needs.
  • Significant experience at post-graduate level of working in multidisciplinary teams to assess the needs of children and families.
  • Experience at post-graduate level of using a range of assessments and assessment processes.
  • Experience at post-graduate level of delivering and evaluating relevant training and coaching programmes.
  • Experience of data gathering methodology and participation in clinical audit.
Knowledge and Skills
  • National policies and procedures relevant to Children's Speech and Language Therapy and to Children and Young People's Education.
  • Safeguarding procedures and their implementation in practice.
  • Demonstrate an ongoing awareness of recent developments in practice and research including National guidance.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and risk management and their implications for the service.
  • Excellent analytical and reflective skills.
  • Highly developed auditory and perceptual skills.
