Job description
Overview

This post replaces an existing post already established in Paediatric respiratory services following retirement but can be tailored to a candidate's special interests. We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join our service and to complement the current team of three friendly and cohesive consultants. The post is offered at 10 PA but we will consider applicants wishing to work less than full time depending on service needs.

The post holder will contribute to the general respiratory and asthma service. They will take on some responsibility for children on Long Term Ventilation and be encouraged to develop specific areas of interest in line with their experience and the needs of the department.

Main duties

The aim of this post is to contribute to the increasing ambulatory and inpatient capacity of the service at St Georges and further develop the service and its research profile. The post holder will receive referrals from other consultants and specialties, from PICU and NICU, and from General Practice. These will be seen as either inpatients or outpatients as appropriate. Patients may be local or from outside the region. There is a 1:4 attending rota for respiratory ward cover with out of hours telephone support. The post holder would be fully responsible for the management of respiratory patients within their expertise and in conjunction with other members of the team and the wider MDT. We have a growing cohort of children with complex respiratory disorders including those on invasive and non-invasive long term respiratory support; congenital and interstitial lung diseases and those with chronic suppurative lung disease.

The service is supported by comprehensive radiological support, physiology including full lung function and sleep, bronchoscopy and thoracic surgery.

Job responsibilities

The respiratory team currently run weekly respiratory and asthma clinics and a number of other joint clinics with other specialities. There are regular clinics for children with difficult asthma, bronchiectasis and those on long-term respiratory support. There are monthly joint clinics with ENT, the neonatal team, haematology and the neuro-disability team. The team also supports PICU, NICU, haematology & oncology (in conjunction with the Royal Marsden Hospital), fetal medicine, paediatric surgery and infectious diseases. Person Specification

Education

  • MRCP or MRCPCH
  • Full registration with GMC
  • On the GMC's Specialist Register OR within six months of CCT at time of scheduled interview.
  • Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR) applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application

Experience

  • Training to be or already an established consultant in Respiratory Paediatrics with a minimum of 24 months experience and training in tertiary respiratory paediatrics departments. qualification (suitable for CESR)
  • Training in paediatric bronchoscopy
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Valid BLS, APLS/PALS, Level 3 Safeguarding

Skills

  • Ability to write and implement management protocols

Knowledge

  • Understanding of the principles of management.
  • Broad knowledge of respiratory paediatrics

Desirable

  • Higher Qualification
