Job summary

Job description

Working with senior and team support, you will be responsible for effectively managing and delivering NIHR Portfolio adopted research studies. You will be working across sites (mainly JR and NOC) to deliver a range of studies which initially will focus on the specialties of genetics, mitochondrial disease, paediatric orthopaedics and paediatric rheumatology Tasks will involve staff education, the identification of eligible patients, patient recruitment and randomisation, data management, sample collection and study administration, which will be facilitated by good communication, organisation and attention to detail as well as being able to work autonomously. The post holder will actively promote research across the Childrens directorate.

• Employed as a Research Nurse with day-to-day responsibility for allocated portfolio of studies and study participants including, as required:
  • Planning
  • Scheduling
  • Conduct including intervention
  • Recruitment & retention of participants
  • Data management
  • Providing nursing care
  • Training and support of clinical staff delivering the interventions
• Fulfil the expectations and capabilities as delegated by the Sponsor, Chief Investigator or Principal Investigator as set out in GCP & Research Governance Framework
• Work collaboratively with OUH and external research & service delivery colleagues to ensure high quality participant care
  We are looking for a nurse who would like to do a secondment to the Childrens Research Team to support the growing level of clinical research delivery. This will potentially involve working with children and adult patients and requires a strong ability to work independently. This is initially for 1 year with the possibility of extending this. Competency in clinical skills relevant to clinical research area - may include but not limited to vital sign recording, drug administration, phlebotomy/ cannulation/ECG/cognitive assessment
• Competent to work under own initiative within boundaries of the role
• Competency in high level of accuracy and when assessing participants and documenting research and care activities
• Able to proactively contribute to the education of learners, MDT colleagues and less experienced staff
• Commitment to evidencing own professional development, capabilities, and competency development
• Engage in clinical supervision where appropriate to develop knowledge, skills and behaviours
• Evidence of effective team working and team leadership (when required) as part of research delivery team

Desirable criteria

• Ability to work with a high level of attention to detail
• Experience of sample processing in a laboratory setting, Registered Nurse (Part of the Nursing and Midwifery Council Register depending on area of practice)
• UK recognised first level degree (HEI Level 6), in Nursing
• Significant experience and expertise within specialty of the recruiting area for the research nurse role - supplemented by specialist training to post-graduate diploma level
• Knowledge of research methodologies
• Evidence of ongoing CPD, including multi-source feedback within own professional portfolio

• Specialist post-graduate education / qualifications, or training relevant to area of clinical practice and/or clinical research delivery.

• Establish and maintain positive working relationships with service support departments, clinical research associates, sponsor representative, R&D staff as appropriate
• Provides supervision non-registered and less experienced staff to ensure effective research and care delivery., Motivated and able to articulate reasons for desire to work in specific practice area
• Ability to recognise own limitations, working within scope of practice, acting on feedback linked to practice change when required
• Excellent communication skills, all channels
