Job summary

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is seeking a Registered Children's Nurse or Registered Nurse with experience in caring for children and young people to join a dedicated paediatric team. The role supports Band 5 orientation and opportunities for professional development in a busy 19-bed unit with day surgery capacity and MDT involvement.

You will provide high standards of care, participate in safeguarding, and work flexible hours with internal rotation covering evenings and weekends.

  • Career progression opportunities, We are a 19 bedded unit which includes one High Dependency bed. We can accommodate up to 6 children for day surgery and work alongside the Paediatric Assessment Unit. Outpatient clinics also run Monday to Friday from the ground floor of the unit.

    We are a busy department in what can be a fast-paced environment. The right candidate will need to be a good communicator, be innovative and self-motivated. They should be committed to the provision of high standards of patient care for our children and families.

    Ensure that patient care remains a priority in inter-professional practice and that referrals to the MDT are timely and discharge planning takes place where appropriate. Be aware of the safeguarding agenda, ensuring protection and identification of vulnerable patients. Ensure effective working relationships are established and maintained with colleagues across the Trust. We are looking for a flexible individual to workfull time or part time hours. Our current shift pattern is 11.5 hour shifts on internal rotation to cover evenings and weekends.

  • Knowledge of NMC Codes of conduct and/or guidelines of professional practice
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of nursing within this clinical area
  • Awareness of health and safety
  • Awareness of quality issues and Clinical Governance
  • Ability to learn from incidents and apply them to new situations, Awareness of resource management, health and safety, clinical risk, governance and quality issues
  • Willingness to actively participate in mechanisms to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the team through audit, Registered Children's Nurse with NMC Registration
  • Registered Nurse (level 1) with significant experience in a clinical area that provides care to children and young people e.g. Children's ward/ED/Theatres and Recovery/Neonatal Unit
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and its application, BSc (or willingness to work towards)
  • Mentorship Qualification (or willingness to undertake), Experience of a children's ward or department/setting where children and their families are nursed
  • Evidence of working with children with life limiting conditions/complex health care needs.
  • Competent at basic nursing care and life support (CPR)
  • Interest in teaching and supervising students, Ability to work as part of a team
  • Good communication skills
  • Organisational skills applied to self: time management, prioritising own caseload, initiative
  • Awareness of the importance of risk management
  • Awareness of Clinical Supervision and Reflective Practice and participate in these as per ward policy
  • Ability to identify problems and recommend solutions
  • Computer literacy
  • Critical analysis skills, IV competency
  • Ability to access central lines including administration of medication and ability to take bloods (or willingness to undertake)
  • ECG competency
