Packaging Buyer

Location: West Midlands or West Yorkshire

Base salary from GBP55,000

We are looking for a proactive and experienced Packaging Buyer, someone who has a strong background in commodity purchasing to join a Supply Chain team.

In this role, you will:

  • Report into the Supply Chain Director
  • Manage and oversee the purchasing of packaging, materials, and equipment from both UK and international suppliers
  • Ensure continuity of supply, drive cost savings, maintain quality standards, and support business growth through strategic sourcing

You ll work closely with internal stakeholders to ensure the business is holding the right stock levels, selecting the best suppliers, and achieving excellent value for money. As a CIPS-qualified (or part-qualified) professional, you ll also ensure all purchasing activity complies with legal and regulatory requirements.

This is a hands-on role where you will also lead, mentor, and develop a small team, while managing your own international sourcing responsibilities, particularly across Europe and the Far East.

Key Responsibilities
  • Research and analyse current and future buying trends, commodity markets, and product innovations.
  • Explore new products, markets, and manufacturing processes with a strong focus on sustainability.
  • Ensure all packaging products meet required quality and compliance standards.
  • Gather and interpret customer feedback through the Sales Team.
  • Negotiate pricing, delivery schedules, quantities, and exclusivity agreements with suppliers.
  • Ensure all import/export activities meet post-Brexit legislation and compliance requirements.
  • Build and maintain strong supplier relationships.
  • Lead and mentor a team of two Buyers, managing performance and development.
  • Administer contracts and agreements, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Purchase goods, materials, and components in line with cost, quality, and delivery targets.
  • Identify and manage risks and opportunities within the supply base.
  • Resolve supplier issues related to pricing, quality, delivery, and invoicing.
  • Support Production Planning using MPS/MRP systems as required.
  • Contribute to key business projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure adherence to company purchasing policies, guidelines, and HSE requirements.
  • Maintain excellent housekeeping standards within the work area.
  • Carry out additional duties as required to support business operations.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Proven experience purchasing from the Far East.
  • Experience managing a small team.
  • Previous experience in a purchasing role within a fast-paced packaging manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of import/export and post-Brexit requirements.
  • Ability to manage budgets, analyse financial data, and calculate margins.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong numerical ability.
  • High proficiency in spreadsheets, presentation tools, and stock management systems.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills.
  • Experience with MPS/MRP planning systems.
Desirable
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Business, Accounting, or Supply Chain.
