Job summary

ROOTS Allotments in Durham is seeking a part-time site role, two days a week (16 hours total). You’ll be outdoors most of the time, on a site buzzing with members and activities. Duties include growing, teaching newcomers, coordinating events, and keeping the site tidy.

You will need a driving licence and a car to move equipment. The job pays at the Living Wage (£13.45/hr) and increases as the site fills. Close to Durham is preferred.

Qualifications

• You have grown plants for a few seasons and know what a bad year feels like.
• You can teach without making anyone feel stupid.
• You like people and understand how a site mood is set by its leader.
• You will get stuck in with tasks like mowing, strimming and moving materials.
• You have a driving licence and a car to shift kit and materials.
• You live close enough to Durham to be on site properly.

Responsibilities

• Teaching people to grow and helping new members get started.
• Run activities that mark the year: sowing days, seed swaps, and managing harvests.
• Find local growers, beekeepers, ecologists, teachers or artists to contribute.
• Look after flagship patches and school donations to keep them presentable.
• Keep the site tidy and well-maintained with mowing, pruning and edging.
• Show visitors around to prospective members.
• Assist with cleaning the toilets and keeping the site welcoming.
