Job description

The Orthopaedic Practitioner is a valued member of a multidisciplinary team whose function is to remove and apply casts and splints to patients within the Trauma, Orthopaedic and Rheumatology outpatient area, fracture clinic and the wider trust environment. They will be expected to follow directions and/or instructions from Medical staff and members of the multidisciplinary team and work closely with the Nurse- in -Charge of Fracture clinic.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

Regularly support care on a day-to-day basis for all patients in the clinical area.

The post holder will be expected to work without direct supervision.

The post holder will be expected to work throughout the hospital and peripheral hospitals as required.

Contribute to resource management and efficiency.

Job responsibilities
  • Assist in providing and delivering a high standard of care, recognising and meeting the specific needs of patients. This can include helping to deliver patient care within the TOR directorate including ward work.
  • Assist nursing staff in providing other direct patient care whilst maintaining comfort, privacy and dignity at all times.
  • To assist patients and provide comfort when clinical procedures are being carried out.
  • To support and position limbs during the application of plaster casts.
  • Undertake the removal of plaster casts in a safe and controlled manner.
  • To apply all types of plaster casts, strapping and splints as per medical prescription in accordance with the British Casting Certificate Guidelines and Trust Policies and Procedures.
  • To work under the direction of the Medical staff within the peripheral clinics.
  • To document clearly and accurately all patient treatments undertaken within the Department.
  • Undertake other tasks identified as appropriate by the nurse in charge.
  • To undertake wound care including the removal of sutures and clips and pin site care, reporting any concerns to the nurse in charge.

Person Specification
Knowledge & Experience
  • Demonstrable experience working as a Trainee Orthopaedic Practitioner or Qualified Orthopaedic Practitioner.
  • Competent in the Use of ANTT for the removal of clips and sutures and the dressing of wounds.
  • Demonstrable experience in Supporting Trainee Orthopaedic Practitioner as they prepare for the British Casting Certificate
Qualifications
  • British Casting Certificate, registration and ongoing portfolio of CPD
  • Observational Assessment module / Teaching Qualification
  • Good numeracy and literacy skills.
  • Works well within a team environment and engages with all members of the team
