Job description

Overview

The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMB) invites applications for two full‑time Consultant Orthodontist to join our busy Orthodontic team. These posts attract 10 PA's in total and there may be the opportunity for an honorary teaching position with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Location & Clinical Activities

The post will be based in Lancaster at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary but will also involve clinical activity at other sites within the Trust, including Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, and several community premises such as Millom Hospital, Queen Victoria Hospital, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

Teaching & Training Opportunities

The Maxillofacial Unit provides teaching for UCLan students at the Morecambe Dental Education Centre and has close links with the UCLan School of Dentistry in Preston. The team has recently welcomed honorary consultants in Endodontics, Prosthodontics and Periodontics, offering scope for further development.

Facilities

All sites are equipped with modern office, secretarial and computer facilities. The Trust employs an electronic EPR and PACS system for radiography and digital photography across the Bay. A fully equipped maxillofacial laboratory is based at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary with high‑quality technical support.

Qualifications

• Fully registered with the General Dental Council, licence to practice and on the specialist list for Orthodontics.
• Successfully completed, or within 6 months of completing, an SAC‑approved training programme in Orthodontics or equivalent at the time of interview.
• Good knowledge of hypodontia management and orthognathic surgery in conjunction with Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Restorative Dentistry teams.
• Strong clinical, teaching and communication skills.

Job Plan & Commitments

The job plan will be negotiable. The unit comprises 1 Consultant Orthodontist, 1 Apprentice Orthodontic Therapist and an overseas MTI Specialist Orthodontic Trainee.
