Job description
Organisational Development Manager

Circa £45k

We’re looking for an experienced OD / L&D Manager to lead improvements in our performance management and workforce development processes and to support us as we adapt our organisational structure to fully integrate new services.

Clarkson Evans is the largest electrical and solar installer working in the new build housing sector, wiring over 24,000 homes a year. Established 45 years ago, we now employ more than 900 staff across the UK and we work with the country’s major house builders. At the core of our business lies our commitment to providing excellent service and achieving high-quality workmanship, as well as our dedication to training large numbers of electrical apprentices. Our values state that we show commitment to achieving high standards, we’ll change when there’s an opportunity to improve, we care about doing the right thing, and through collaboration we achieve more, valuing long‑term career progression.

We’re now looking for someone who will bring their OD / L&D expertise to help us clearly define the purpose and expectations of each role in the business and put the structure and training in place to maximise performance. You’ll also play an important role in helping us standardise practices between departments and better define reporting lines and accountability.

Based at our HQ in Gloucester, you’ll join an HR team of six and report to our Head of HR. Occasional travel to our regional branches may be required but your focus will be engaging with colleagues in our management team at HQ. There will be some flexibility for home working but typically you’ll be in the office most days to build relationships with colleagues across departments. This is a full‑time role (39 hours a week), with early starts being the norm in our industry (typically 8:00 am) finishing an hour earlier on Fridays.

Key responsibilities
  • Identify opportunities for improvement by undertaking internal diagnostics, analysis and evaluation to understand barriers and define solutions
  • Implement a process to ensure effective one‑to‑ones are in place across the business
  • Work with managers to ensure up‑to‑date job descriptions are documented for every unique role in the business, and that these are updated as appropriate
  • Carry out training needs analysis to identify skills gaps
  • Manage L&D programmes, including in‑person delivery of training where appropriate
  • Support the Senior Management Team to review departmental structures and ensure they are fit for purpose with clear reporting lines and accountability
  • Provide specialist advice to ensure a structured approach to managing change is embedded across the business
Role requirements
  • A proven track record in delivering successful OD projects and supporting organisational change.
  • Experience within, and a passion for, learning and development, ideally within the construction sector or another ‘blue collar’ environment.
  • Effective planning and project management skills.
  • An understanding of change management methodology and approaches.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presentation and training delivery skills.
  • Proven coaching/mentoring skills.
  • Ability to build trust and rapport quickly and engage effectively with staff from across the business.
  • Flexible, adaptable and comfortable with responding to changing priorities.
  • Committed to high standards and continuous improvement.
  • Experience of managing and developing online learning content.
  • A full manual driving licence.
Package
  • Salary will be circa £45k (negotiable, depending on skills and experience).
  • 28 days holiday plus bank holidays (plus the opportunity to buy up to 5 extra days).
  • Company Pension Scheme.
  • Life assurance.
  • Social events are a key feature at Clarkson Evans, with summer and Christmas parties for HQ staff, a Children’s Christmas party and regular events organised by our social committee.
  • Free on‑site parking.
  • Support and counselling services.
