Myn is seeking an optometrist to perform comprehensive eye examinations and provide high-quality patient care in a supportive practice.

Whether you are planning a long-term permanent base or flexible locum work, this role offers clinical autonomy and opportunities for Independent Prescribing where eligible, within a patient-centred team.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Carry out NHS and/or private sight tests including refraction.
  • Assess and manage ocular conditions with appropriate referrals.
  • Fit and review contact lenses when needed.
  • Advise on spectacle and contact lens options with dispensing team.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records per standards.
  • Ensure compliance with GOC and safety standards.
  • Support practice performance with efficient testing times.
  • If IP qualification is included, prescribe ocular medications within scope.

Job description

Role Overview

The successful candidate will carry out comprehensive eye examinations for a varied patient base, providing accurate diagnosis, appropriate referral, and excellent patient care. This role suits an optometrist looking for a supportive practice environment, whether building a long-term permanent base or seeking flexible locum work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out comprehensive NHS and/or private sight tests, including refraction, ocular health examination, and appropriate use of practice diagnostic equipment (e.g. OCT, fundus photography, visual fields).
  • Assess and manage a range of ocular conditions, referring to Hospital Eye Service (HES) or GP as clinically indicated.
  • Fit and review contact lenses where relevant to the role.
  • Provide clear, accurate patient advice on spectacle and contact lens options, working closely with dispensing colleagues.
  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical records in line with College of Optometrists and practice standards.
  • Ensure compliance with GOC standards of practice, clinical governance, and health & safety requirements.
  • Support practice performance by maintaining efficient testing times while ensuring thorough, high-quality patient care.
  • Where the role includes IP (Independent Prescribing) qualification, prescribe ocular medications within scope of practice.
Essential Qualifications & Registration
  • Degree in Optometry (BSc (Hons) Optometry or equivalent) from a GOC-approved programme.
  • Full registration with the General Optical Council (GOC), in good standing.
  • Current Professional Indemnity Insurance appropriate to optometric practice in the UK.
  • Evidence of up-to-date CPD in line with GOC requirements.
  • Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one).
Desirable Criteria
  • Independent Prescribing (IP) qualification, or willingness to undertake IP training.
  • Additional certifications - e.g. Glaucoma (Wales Eye Care Service / Scotland equivalent), Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS), or Diabetic Eye Screening accreditation.
  • Experience with OCT and advanced ocular imaging technology.
  • Prior experience in a high-street multiple, independent practice, or hospital optometry setting.
  • Experience with paediatric or low vision assessments.

  • Strong clinical judgement, with a thorough and patient-centred approach to eye examinations.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to explain clinical findings clearly to patients of all backgrounds.
  • Comfortable balancing clinical thoroughness with commercial testing schedules.
  • Collaborative team player, working closely with dispensing opticians and support staff.
