Job description
About the Role

Every day our rail network carries thousands of passenger and freight trains across miles of track, undergoing constant wear and tear. As a Track Operative you will maintain and repair the track components—rails, sleepers, fasteners, switches, ballast and foundations—to keep services safe and running smoothly.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support and learn from Track Technicians and Team Leaders during each shift.
  • Fetch, carry and use track maintenance tools and hand equipment.
  • Work safely next to moving trains travelling at high speed.
  • Carry out maintenance tasks during night or weekend shifts to minimise service disruption.
Working Conditions

The role requires working in all weather conditions, at all times of the year, and may involve on‑call duties. You will need to be prepared for a varied shift pattern and be able to live within a 60‑minute radius of the site.

All Track Operatives receive full training and guidance, learning how to use a range of hand tools and heavy machinery safely. Pending successful learning and development, you can progress to a Track Technician.

Qualifications
  • Hold a valid Driving Licence and be willing to drive vehicles as required.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Hold or be working towards an NVQ Level 1 (or equivalent) in a relevant subject.
