Job summary

Polaris Education – Stannard School in Dunstable is seeking a dedicated One-to-One Teaching Assistant to support a pupil with tailored learning support during term-time.

The role involves mentoring a pupil or small group, assisting the class teacher, monitoring progress, and helping create a positive, inclusive learning environment. A strong GCSE in English and Maths, plus good IT skills, are expected, with opportunities for professional development and DBS check funded by the school.

Qualifications

• GCSE Grade C or equivalent in English Language and Mathematics.
• Strong basic education, ideally to A Level.
• Sound IT skills.
• Flexible with growth mindset.
• Previous Teaching Assistant experience.
• Experience with SEMH in educational settings.
• Will take additional responsibilities within school areas (e.g., lunchtimes, Forest School, yoga).
• Experience with behaviour-management strategies.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development.

Responsibilities

• Mentor and support one pupil or a small group of up to six pupils.
• Maintain awareness of EHCPs and support target evaluation.
• Support the classroom teacher during lessons.
• Report on pupils’ progress and concerns with staff.
• Supervise pupils outside lessons and during trips.
• Assist with lesson planning and preparation.
• Set work and undertake marking as needed.
• Build positive relationships to drive learning outcomes.

Role Responsibilities

• Mentor and support one pupil or a small group of no more than six pupils
• Maintain an awareness of the EHCPs for pupils in your care and support the meeting and evaluation of targets
• Support the classroom teacher during lessons
• Report on pupils’ progress and concerns, liaising with other school staff to ensure pupils’ needs are met
• Supervise pupils during times outside lessons, including extra-curricular activities and school trips
• Assist with lesson planning and classroom preparation
• Set work where appropriate and undertake marking
• Build positive relationships with your pupils and drive interaction and positive learning outcomes

Requirements

• Have a strong basic education, ideally to A Level, with a minimum of GCSE Grade C or equivalent in English Language and Mathematics, and sound IT skills
• Be flexible and demonstrate a growth mindset
• Previous experience in a similar role, such as a Teaching Assistant
• Previous experience of working with pupils with SEMH within an educational setting
• Be experienced and confident in taking additional responsibility within an area of the school, such as food hygiene, Forest School, lunchtimes or school yoga
• Experience of behaviour-management strategies and techniques
• A commitment to professional development and willingness to learn
