The OGC Lawyer – Conflicts and Ethics at Latham & Watkins in the UK supports compliance programs, conflicts intake, and risk management across jurisdictions, including outside the US. The role sits in London or Manchester and offers hybrid in-office work.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Law degree or equivalent is required.
  • Qualification as solicitor, barrister or equivalent foreign lawyer with right to practice in home jurisdiction.
  • Active practicing certificate or local bar membership is required.
  • Post-qualification experience preferred.
  • Experience in a conflicts team
  • General law firm compliance experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist senior lawyers and Conflicts staff in identifying, evaluating, and resolving ethical and business conflict issues.
  • Perform legal research and analysis on conflicts or ethics topics as requested by senior counsel.
  • Support general risk management programs, such as file audits and contract reviews.
  • Assist with review/analysis of Outside Counsel Guidelines and engagement letters.
  • Research and analyse complex ethics and compliance questions for stakeholders.

About the Role

The OGC Lawyer – Conflicts and Ethics is an integral part of Latham’s Office of the General Counsel team. This role will be responsible for supporting a number of compliance programs including new business and conflicts intake and general regulatory risk management, while developing and maintaining substantive knowledge of and familiarity with the legal ethics, and professional responsibility rules applicable in the firm’s geographic jurisdictions, particularly those outside of the United States Latham’s procedures, policies, and practices relating to conflicts and other ethical issues. This role will be located in either our London or Manchester office. Please note that this role may be eligible for a flexible working schedule that allows for a hybrid and in-office presence.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Other key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting senior lawyers and other Conflicts Department staff in identifying, evaluating, and resolving ethical and business conflict issues relating to conflicts checks for laterals and new business
  • Performing legal research and analysis projects relating to conflicts or other aspects of ethics and/or professional responsibility as requested by the Senior Assistant General Counsels
  • Taking responsibility for general risk management programs, such as file audits, accountants letters, contract review
  • Assisting with the review and analysis of Outside Counsel Guidelines, Engagement Letters, and other terms of engagement with firm clients
  • Assisting various stakeholders in researching and analysing complex ethics and compliance questions

  • Possess highly developed and professional interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with people at all organizational levels of the firm
  • Exhibit the ability to work in a team environment
  • Display the willingness to work in a hybrid style, with the majority of the days being in the office

And have:

  • A bachelor’s degree
  • A law degree or equivalent
  • A qualification as a solicitor, barrister or equivalent foreign lawyer with an unfettered right to practice in their home jurisdiction
  • An active practicing certificate or local bar membership
  • Post qualification experience, preferably
  • Experience working in a conflicts team
  • General law firm compliance experience, preferably
