Job description

Summary

Training to work in all areas of the nursery with different age groups of children. Gaining a full understanding of the EYFS, to plan activities and to record the children’s development as they move through the nursery. Work and interact directly with children on a day‑to‑day basis, supporting the planning of and delivery of activities.

Pay and Hours

Annual wage: £15,704 a year (pay may be negotiated and may rise after the probation period).

Hours: 40 hours a week, shifts to be confirmed.

Duration and Positions

12 months, 2 positions available.

Training

Early Years Practitioner – Apprenticeship Level 2. Apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation; at least 20% of working hours spent training or studying. College or training organisation: WALTHAM FOREST CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TRAINING TRUST LIMITED.

Training Plan

  • Developing your own role and engaging with staff training
Course Contents
  • Support babies and young children through transitions and significant events such as moving onto school, moving house or the birth of a sibling.
  • Recognise when a child is in danger, at risk of serious harm or abuse and explain the procedures to be followed to protect them.
  • Identify risks and hazards in the provision and during off‑site visits relating to children, staff and visitors and follow reporting procedures.
  • Use prevention and control of infection techniques for hand washing, food preparation and hygiene, deal with spillages safely, dispose of waste correctly and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Use equipment, furniture and materials safely and securely, following manufacturers’ instructions and provision requirements.
  • Encourage children to be aware of personal safety and the safety of others and develop personal hygiene practices.
  • Promote health and wellbeing by encouraging healthy, balanced and nutritious meals and physical activity.
  • Carry out respectful care routines appropriate to the development, stage, dignity and needs of the child.
  • Communicate with all children, including those for whom English is an additional language and those with additional needs, in ways that will be understood.
  • Extend children’s development and learning through verbal and non‑verbal communication.
  • Work with colleagues to identify and plan educational programmes supporting holistic development through play, creativity, social development and learning.
  • Observe children, assess, plan and record outcomes, and share results accurately and confidentially in line with statutory requirements.
  • Use learning activities to support early language development, mark making, writing, reading and mathematics learning.

Other Requirements

Working with young children can be tiring; you may be required to work shifts. Good time‑keeping and reliability are essential. You must be prepared to complete your qualification within the allotted time and attend all college workshops as required.
