Responsibilities
- Lead team leadership, ensuring safe, high‑quality care, managing team operations, workforce skill mix and professional development.
- Drive site‑based service improvements and trust‑wide transformation initiatives while maintaining robust clinical governance through audits, quality reviews and risk assessments.
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to support integrated care, optimise service capacity and patient flow across high‑demand areas.
- Act as an autonomous practitioner, delivering specialist ophthalmic care including intravitreal injections, medical retina consultations and virtual review sessions.
- Facilitate governance and quality control activities such as audits, benchmarking, observations of care and other quality initiatives.
- Lead education and training efforts, develop professional development plans, support new staff induction and mentorship, and maintain training compliance.
- Lead research and service‑development projects, undertake clinical audits and disseminate evidence‑based practice.
- Manage people and performance: conduct appraisals, support staff well‑being, maintain competency and training compliance, and address underperformance.
- Maintain general responsibilities: comply with policy, uphold confidentiality, promote inclusion, support safeguarding and infection control, and provide a duty of care to colleagues and patients.
Key Competencies and Skills
- NMC Level 1 Registered Nurse (RN1) with adherence to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
- Proven experience in managing and leading a nursing team.
- Specialist enhanced clinical practice within ophthalmology.
- Excellent oral and written communication, strong leadership, negotiation and conflict‑resolution skills.
- In‑depth knowledge of audits, risk management, safeguarding, infection control and quality improvement.
Desirable Qualifications
- Independent / Non‑medical Prescribing qualification.
- Experience in service development and change management.
- Experience of clinical decision‑making and autonomous practice.
- Experience of administering intravitreal injections.
Working Conditions
Permanent contract, full‑time or part‑time, job share and flexible working. Salary £53,751 to £60,651 per annum, inclusive of high cost area. Band 7. Works at Princess Royal University Hospital, Orpington.
