Role context

Severe Accident Analysis is a pivotal part of the design and safety justification of each of our nuclear propulsion plants and is vital in ensuring that we meet regulatory requirements. The severe accident analysis team develops models of the reactor plant and containment and uses these to conduct technical analysis of the behaviour of the reactor plant in severe accident scenarios. The results of these simulations are used to:

  • Derive design requirements for reactor containment structures and associated components under severe accident conditions
  • Assess radiological consequences in support of safety cases and meeting regulatory requirements such as REPPIR
  • Support our enterprise partners through bespoke severe accident assessments of our existing and future products
  • Undertake verification and validation activities of severe accident codes and models

The severe accident team undertakes a wide range of different analysis, that touches upon multiple disciplines. In addition to undertaking analytical work to support the safety case and regulatory requirements for current campaigns, there is also the opportunity to be involved in the development of new analytical methods and research opportunities to develop capability in new analytical codes.

What you will be doing

You will be accountable for the delivery of delegated major technical work packages to agreed time, quality, and cost. This will include severe accident analysis across the entire reactor and plant lifecycle, from concept and design stages through to In-Service support and decommissioning. Responsibilities include:

  • Being directly responsible for the delivery of highly specialised technical work packages in support of the submarine programme using cutting edge tools and methods, collaborating with other technical areas to deliver successful outcomes
  • Monitoring of progress on task activities and reporting against the baseline plan
  • Identifying and managing risks and opportunities within the scope of technical work packages
  • Working with the Group Leader to establish commitments, budget and targets for the delegated projects and to provide regular updates on progress in line with business requirements
Who we are looking for

  • A strong academic background with a relevant degree (undergraduate, masters, or PhD) in engineering, physics or a scientific subject
  • An analytical mindset, critical thinking and attention to detail
  • The ability to communicate effectively with any audience, quickly establishing credibility and buy-in
  • A willingness to learn from others and collaborate to achieve wider goals

Severe accident engineering opportunities are available at all levels from those expecting to graduate in the near-future to experienced senior engineers. The professional level and the salary of the position will be dependent on the skills and experience of the successful candidate.
