Job description

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a motivated engineer or scientist to join our team of physicists and engineers based at Sizewell B Power Station.

About The Role

The team’s core responsibility is monitoring reactor performance, ensuring safe operation, maintaining the station safety case, compliance with the Nuclear Site Licence and management of the interface with regulatory bodies. You’ll ensure that legislation, company technical standards, technical specifications and management control processes are applied and followed.

This is an exciting time to join as Sizewell B has an ambitious ten years ahead.

As well as the core work, Nuclear Safety Engineers will be required to support significant projects to:

  • Extend the life of Sizewell B by at least another 20 years.
  • Manage the impact of climate change on site.
  • Support ongoing Dry Fuel Store Campaigns and development of the attendant safety case.
  • Ensure SZB maintains a robust Nuclear Safety position whilst enabling the construction and operation of an adjacent nuclear power station.

All of this offers the opportunity to play a significant role, within a highly skilled team who will be instrumental in securing Sizewell B’s future.

If this sounds like a role for you, we would love to hear from you!

Pay, Benefits And Culture

The starting salary for this appointment will be within the range of £47,513 to £84,595 and will be dependent on your existing salary, competence, experiences, and qualifications. The full salary range for this role is up to £99,929 with terms and conditions covered by the EDF Company Agreement.

We’re talking about everything from enhanced parental leave to electric vehicle leasing, health insurance to product discounts, critical illness insurance to technology vouchers, gym membership to season ticket loans.

At EDF UK, we embrace flexibility while recognising that everyone's working needs are different. Whether you're in our office spaces, on site, or working remotely, we promote an environment that supports collaboration, connection, and comfort. No matter where you are, our priority is to make sure you feel safe, valued, and celebrated.

Here, we do right by each other and everyone’s welcome. We’re on an action-oriented journey, championing equity, diversity, and inclusion. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.

We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application. Please let us know if you need to request reasonable adjustments.

We take pride in fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment, where the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our employees drive fresh thinking and innovation. We understand that success means different things to different people. We believe there are multiple definitions of what it means to succeed. That’s why we support you to pursue a career that’s unique to you. Because success is personal.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Building effective networks and influencing effectively towards the achievement of the station business plan
  • Performing routine monitoring of the reactor core
  • Provision of reactor physics and safety case advice to the operators and other departments on site
  • Maintaining and developing knowledge within your core discipline whilst cross skilling into other disciplines
  • Developing and accessing changes to the station safety case
  • Supporting outage (plant Shutdown) preparation and outage delivery
  • Advising on nuclear safety aspects of plant modifications, significant projects and other station interfaces.
Who You Are

The minimum qualification for this role is HNC (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline and it may be advantageous if you hold a relevant degree.

  • You will need an understanding of engineering and/or physics principles.
  • You’ll be self-motivated, resilient and have a positive attitude towards your work.
  • You must be able to work independently, use your own initiative and act autonomously to drive nuclear safety.

We encourage applications from all areas of science and engineering, not just the Nuclear Power sector, so this is ideal if you are looking for a change of career direction.

Full and extensive training and support will be provided to the successful applicants.

Closing date for applications is Sunday September 6th, and interviews will take place week commencing Monday September 14th

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) which will, ordinarily, require you to have British residency for the last 3 years.
