Job summary

Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, reliable and highly motivated individual to join our dedicated team at University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire, as a band 2 assistant.

Overview

You will be part of a large clinical team providing support to a variety of staff groups including technologists and scientists across nuclear medicine and vascular ultrasound. Duties involve assisting with patient care before, during and after imaging examinations, coordinating the movement of inpatients with porters and preparing patients for their examinations (height, weight, blood sugar, etc).

It is essential that the successful candidate enjoys working with people and has a genuine interest in patient care. You must have excellent communication skills, work well as part of a team, and also be able to use your initiative and work individually.

Responsibilities
  • To provide support and assistance to patients and staff as required.
  • To assist technologists, scientists and nurses with the examination and care of radiology patients, assisting with clerical procedures and preparation as required.
  • To assist patients in preparation for, and whilst undergoing, routine and specialised nuclear medicine examinations.
  • To observe and care for patients while waiting for examinations and to communicate any concerns to trained staff as appropriate.
  • To coordinate and facilitate the transfer of inpatients for scans with the porters and clinical staff into the appropriate scan environments at the right time.
  • To check patient identification and documentation in accordance with departmental protocols and clinical requests.
  • To assist radiologists, scientists, registrars, technologists and nurses in performing examinations and attending to the patient’s welfare at all times.
  • To support service delivery by co‑ordinating workflow and support facilities within specialised areas.
  • To maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times; to clean and perform routine operational maintenance on equipment as required and participate in the departmental quality‑assurance programme.
  • To be familiar with, understand and apply the principles of radiation safety, both nationally and locally regulated or protocol‑led.
  • To facilitate communication between the department and all service users, patients, relatives, staff and external users, including any adherence to Trust policies and participation in annual appraisal/review systems.
  • To communicate with patients and professional colleagues in situations that may be traumatic due to pressures of work, or where the patient’s condition may be a barrier to comprehension and compliance (e.g., claustrophobia, learning difficulties or injury/traumatised).
  • To assist in the implementation of all manual and electronic information systems, ensuring consistently accurate data collection and recording in support of standard data collection, performance activity, audit and capacity and demand analysis.
  • To assist with the practical experience of newly inducted staff.
  • To ensure in‑house stock movement, especially specialist room stocks, and linen handling according to infection control standards.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
  • Good communication skills and a genuine interest in patient care.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and also work independently using initiative.
