Job description

Audit Manager - Charities & Not-for-Profit

Location: London
Salary: £67,000-£73,000 DOE
Job Type: Permanent, Full-time
Working Pattern: Hybrid - up to 3 days working from home

If you're an experienced audit professional looking for a role where your work has genuine purpose, this could be an excellent next step. A well-established professional services organisation is looking for an Audit Manager - Charities & Not-for-Profit to join a growing specialist team, working with organisations that deliver meaningful social, environmental and community impact. This is a role for someone who enjoys combining technical audit expertise with relationship management, team leadership and commercial awareness. You'll have the opportunity to work closely with senior stakeholders while developing your own profile within a specialist area of accountancy.

The Role

As an Audit Manager - Charities & Not-for-Profit, you'll take responsibility for a varied portfolio of clients, overseeing engagements from initial planning through to completion. You'll work alongside senior colleagues to provide high-quality audit and advisory support, while acting as a trusted point of contact for clients. The client base is diverse and may include charities, educational organisations, grant-making bodies and other purpose-led entities. You'll gain exposure to organisations of varying sizes and structures, making this a technically interesting role with plenty of scope for development.

What you'll be doing
  • Manage a portfolio of charity and not-for-profit audit clients, taking ownership of delivery, deadlines and client service.
  • Lead audits from planning and risk assessment through to completion and final reporting.
  • Review audit files and ensure work is completed to a consistently high technical standard.
  • Advise clients on accounting, controls, governance and sector-specific matters.
  • Apply your understanding of charity reporting requirements, including the Charities SORP.
  • Build strong working relationships with clients and act as a confident point of contact throughout engagements.
  • Support proposals, tenders and other business development activity where appropriate.
  • Identify opportunities to broaden client relationships and introduce additional services.
  • Coach, supervise and develop junior members of the audit team.
  • Keep up to date with changes in accounting standards, regulation and developments affecting the sector.
  • Contribute to internal training, recruitment and wider team initiatives.
What we're looking for

You'll ideally be ACA or ACCA qualified and have a strong background gained within an audit and accountancy practice. We're particularly interested in professionals who can demonstrate:

  • Proven experience managing audit assignments with limited supervision.
  • Strong technical knowledge and confidence dealing with accounting and audit issues.
  • Previous experience auditing charities or not-for-profit organisations.
  • Familiarity with the Charities SORP and the wider regulatory environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build credibility with clients at different levels.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring more junior team members.
  • A commercially aware approach and the ability to identify client needs and opportunities.
  • Strong organisation skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines.
  • A proactive, resilient and positive approach to problem solving.

Knowledge of VAT and tax considerations affecting charities would be advantageous, although it is not essential.

What's on offer
  • £70,000-£75,000 salary, depending on experience and relevant sector expertise.
  • Hybrid working, with the flexibility to work remotely for up to three days per week.
  • A 35-hour working week with sensible core hours.
  • 25 days' annual leave plus additional benefits.
  • Contributory pension scheme.
  • Life assurance.
  • Flexible and family-friendly benefits.
  • Eligibility for a profit-sharing scheme.
  • Potential discretionary bonus.
  • Structured professional development and ongoing technical training.
  • Genuine opportunities to progress within a growing specialist team.
  • The chance to develop further expertise across audit, advisory and accountancy.

The combination of specialist client exposure, flexible working and progression makes this a strong opportunity for an experienced audit professional who wants more than simply managing a portfolio. If you're an ACA or ACCA qualified auditor considering your next move, I'd be happy to have a confidential conversation about the opportunity and how it could fit with your career plans.
