Overview

This is a 12 month fixed-term contract position.

Role

An opportunity has arisen in our Oxford based Research & Development team for an NGS Research Assistant. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a wide range of molecular biology projects, supporting the research, development and improvement of innovative assays and technologies. You will play a hands-on role in laboratory-based research, experimental design and reporting, while helping to maintain a high level of standards.

What you'll be doing for us
  • To complete and contribute to a variety of molecular biology projects, including:
    • Experimental design and implementation of laboratory work
    • Contributing to the research, development, and improvement of new and existing assays
    • Making recommendations to senior staff in a timely, thorough, and coherent manner
    • Reporting on a weekly and monthly basis
    • Monitoring relevant scientific literature
    • Maintaining lab books/electronic records
    • Presenting data at internal meetings
  • Provide assistance in the day-to-day running of the laboratory, including:
    • Maintenance of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)
    • Assistance with the development and execution of research protocols involving molecular biology
  • Health and safety, information security and quality, including:
    • Complying with all the company's health and safety, information security and quality standard policies
    • Generate, and update where necessary, Risk Assessments (RAs), COSHH forms and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • To complete any other tasks commensurate with the level and nature of the post as delegated by the Head of Research/Development.
What we are looking for in you

Essential

  • BSc degree in Life Sciences or relative discipline
  • Molecular biology/genetics knowledge
  • Strong desire to perform lab-based research and innovative development work
  • Motivated and enthusiastic with good attention to detail
  • Good IT skills and ability to present complex datasets
  • Good time management skills: flexibility to multitask, ability to perform complex studies in parallel with minimal supervision to agreed deadlines.

Desirable

  • Hands-on experience in molecular biology assay execution (sequencing or other)
  • Ability to ensure integrity of scientific data, including troubleshooting, problem identification, resolution, and communication
  • Training/working knowledge of bioinformatics
