The Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a New Business Underwriter to join the Markel team. You will be a member of a successful national underwriting team dealing exclusively with a variety of care and charity risks in accordance with Markel’s underwriting appetite. The role is based within the Care Sales team, dealing with a wide variety of Social Welfare, Care, Not For Profit and Charity policies. Working alongside other departments within the business to develop and maintain relationships both internally and externally and deliver an exceptional service to our brokers.

We are open to any location for this role as the team are mostly remote based with occasional office visits required.

What you’ll be doing
  • Demonstrate and promote a thorough knowledge of company guidelines and authority levels in order to achieve monthly, quarterly and annual new business team and individual targets
  • Provide excellent service to our brokers to ensure deadlines are met
  • Underwrite a variety of exposures within the defined underwriting authority
  • Attend underwriting meetings as required throughout the year to provide insight into developments, trends and feedback on market conditions
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships within the wider business
Requirements / Must Haves
  • Demonstrable underwriting experience – ideally in social welfare/care risks, although commercial insurance would be considered
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Track record in building and developing broker relationships
  • Demonstrable IT skills including MS Office and our systems including the broker e-trading platform
  • Proven ability to secure business whilst maintaining underwriting discipline
