Job summary

Markel International is seeking a New Business Underwriter to drive profitable growth in Care and Charity portfolios across Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, London and Croydon.

Hybrid working (3 days in office / 2 days at home) supports a flexible, autonomous environment where you will develop specialist underwriting expertise and strengthen broker partnerships within a market-leading team.

Qualifications

• Previous underwriting experience in Care or Charity insurance.
• New business underwriting experience preferred.
• Strong commercial judgement and decision-making capabilities.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage workload.
• Proactive in broker engagement and business development.

Responsibilities

• Underwrite and win new business across Care, Social Welfare and Charity sectors.
• Assess submissions, review claims experience and evaluate risk exposures.
• Produce competitive quotations while maintaining underwriting discipline.
• Meet and manage against new business income targets.
• Build broker relationships and be a trusted market contact.
• Support broker development, training sessions and proposition discussions.
• Collaborate with Distribution, Trading and Operations teams.
• Identify market trends and growth opportunities.
• Act as a specialist ambassador for Markel's Care proposition.

What you'll be doing:

As a New Business Underwriter, you'll play a key role in driving profitable growth across our Care and Charity portfolio.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Underwriting and winning new business across the Care, Social Welfare and Charity sectors
• Assessing submissions, reviewing claims experience and evaluating risk exposures
• Producing competitive quotations whilst maintaining underwriting discipline
• Managing and delivering against individual new business income targets
• Building strong broker relationships and becoming a trusted market contact
• Supporting broker development activity, training sessions and proposition discussions
• Working collaboratively with Distribution, Trading and Operations teams
• Identifying market trends and opportunities to support future growth
• Acting as a specialist ambassador for Markel's Care proposition within the broker market

What we're looking for:

You’ll ideally bring:

Essential

• Previous underwriting experience
• Care Insurance or Charity Insurance experience
• New business underwriting experience
• Strong commercial judgement and decision-making capability
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
• The ability to work independently and manage your own workload
• A proactive approach to broker engagement and business development

We'd also love to see

• Existing broker relationships
• Experience presenting to brokers or delivering training sessions
• Social Welfare underwriting exposure
• Ambition to progress your underwriting career within a specialist insurer
