Working Pattern: 35 hours per week. We are a flexible employer and will consider a variety of working patterns on a case‑by‑case basis. For example, compressed hours, term‑time working or part‑time working.
Location: Hybrid working model. Contractual base either at Meadowbank House, Edinburgh (EH8 7AU) or St Vincent Plaza, Glasgow (G2 5LD). You will be expected to attend one of these locations as required by the role.

The Role
Registers of Scotland (RoS) is modernising the network and infrastructure services that underpin our digital products and public‑facing services. As a Network Engineer, you will use your solid networking fundamentals to help operate, support and improve secure, resilient connectivity across our offices, cloud platforms and data centres. This role is ideal for someone who brings hands‑on experience in enterprise networking and is ready to take their skills further. You will work closely with senior engineers and cross‑functional teams, gaining exposure to automation, network modernisation and cloud‑centric architectures while contributing to high‑quality, reliable services for colleagues and customers.
On a typical day you will…
- Provide 2nd‑line support for LAN, WAN, WiFi and data centre networking across RoS sites and cloud environments
- Investigate and resolve incidents and problems, escalating to senior colleagues or vendors where appropriate
- Manage and fulfil service requests relating to network hardware, firewall rules, VPN access and related technologies
- Actively monitor SIEM and network monitoring tools, responding promptly to alerts to protect availability, performance and security
- Capture accurate incident records, contribute to root‑cause analysis and implement agreed remediation actions
- Follow RoS information security policies and procedures and support alignment with ISO 27001 controls
- Maintain up‑to‑date documentation, diagrams and configuration records (for example in NetBox or equivalent tools)
- Contribute technical input to small projects or work‑packages, such as site network refreshes, firewall policy improvements or cloud connectivity changes
- Support Senior Network Engineers with build, test and rollout activities for new infrastructure solutions
- Identify opportunities to simplify processes, improve reliability and reduce technical debt, proposing practical improvements
- Collaborate with product teams, digital delivery squads and security colleagues to ensure network and infrastructure needs are understood and met
- Use and contribute to automation tooling (for example Ansible / Arista AVD) to deliver consistent, repeatable changes
- Support the integration of network and infrastructure changes into CI/CD pipelines where appropriate
- Knowledge or experience within a programming language (i.e. Python) or openness and drive to learn new skill sets
Key Responsibilities
Essential Criteria – Skills and Attributes for Success
Technical Experience:
- Proven relevant experience providing network engineering support in an enterprise or public‑sector environment of at least 2 years
- Hands‑on experience troubleshooting and maintaining network services (e.g. routing, switching, WiFi, VPNs)
- Experience supporting firewall and remote access solutions, ideally including Palo Alto GlobalProtect (or similar)
- Ability to own incidents and service requests through to completion, working with senior engineers and suppliers where needed
- Experience working collaboratively in agile or iterative delivery teams, adapting to changing priorities
Communicating and Influencing
- Explain network or infrastructure issues, risks and options clearly to non‑technical colleagues, senior stakeholders and third‑party suppliers
- Choose appropriate communication methods (e.g. tickets, chat, calls, diagrams, documentation), taking account of different needs and preferences
- Share information openly, check understanding and adjust your approach based on feedback
- Contribute positively to meetings and incident calls, focusing on solutions and clear next steps

- Build effective working relationships with infrastructure, security, architecture, product and supplier teams
- Contribute actively to a positive, inclusive team culture where colleagues feel respected and supported

- Use monitoring data, logs, SIEM alerts and supplier input to understand problems and identify appropriate actions
- Assess the impact, risk and urgency of incidents and changes, escalating where necessary and documenting the rationale
- Present well‑reasoned options and recommendations to Senior Infrastructure Engineers and other stakeholders
- Balance operational stability with opportunities to simplify, automate or modernise services
Managing a Quality Service
- Take responsibility for delivering high‑quality, reliable infrastructure services that support RoS’ digital products and customers
- Plan and prioritise your work to meet agreed SLAs and deadlines, keeping customers and stakeholders updated on progress
- Follow RoS policies, standards and security requirements, and suggest improvements where they could be clearer or more effective
- Help gather and respond to feedback from internal and external customers, using it to improve how services are delivered
