Job Title: Network Engineer

Job Reports To: Infrastructure Manager

Job Purpose
  • Reporting to the Infrastructure Manager you would provide network and hardware management for IS Infrastructure.
  • Participate in IT projects, implement approved designs, and transition to BAU.
  • Proactively monitor and report on capacity and performance of Howdens network and hardware infrastructure.
  • Provide detailed 2nd/3rd level support for a wide range of network products.

Dimensions (Scale and Size)

Being part of the Technical Operations team who provide IT Infrastructure services to support a nationwide network of depots, core manufacturing and logistics facilities.
Required to engage in projects and infrastructure implementations that are delivered in a timely and cost effective solution.
Department Budget - Depends on project budget (typically between £10k to £500,000).
Countries covered - Howdens locations in the UK as required, primarily Midlands with occasional London, Northern England and Europe based projects.

Principle Accountabilities

Network Engineers will focus on following specialisations:

  • Management, design and reporting on Network, Network Security and associated technologies (mainly Firewall, LAN, WAN, and Load Balancer systems).
  • Systems monitoring, SLA’s, Operational procedures and training.
  • Fault management and Installations.
  • Automation and scripting.
Additional Information
  • Ability to travel to other Howdens locations and the ability to work outside of normal hours is a requirement.
  • 37.5 hour week contract however there is also a support rota for “Out of Hours” cover.
Knowledge & Experience
  • Check Point Experience
  • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or equivalent professional level certification with previous experience with Cisco DNA.
  • Design & implementation of complex firewall and VPN environments.
  • Design & implementation LAN/WiFi environments incl. Software Defined Networks.
  • Proficient in firewall & network automation.
  • Proficient in networking for Internet services.
  • Knowledge of data/voice network equipment and protocols.
  • Analytical approach with good fault finding skills.
  • Ability to design and present network solutions using best of breed technologies.
  • 3 years + experience of Cisco network design and implementation.
  • Experience of Load balancing technologies.
  • Experience of Cisco ISE & ACI/DNA technologies.
  • Experience of Wireless technologies.
Relationships & Competencies
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate with colleagues at all levels.
  • Ability to work with 3rd party suppliers.
