Job description
Role Summary

Join Northern Gas Networks (NGN) as a Network Analyst, playing a role in the integrity, safety, and resilience of our gas assets. This engineering‑led position demands a technical, analytical mindset and a passion for protecting and optimising essential infrastructure that serves millions. Working as part of the Investment Programme team, you will shape the future of gas transportation by ensuring our infrastructure meets demand safely, reliably, and efficiently – not just today’s energy demands, but for the hydrogen‑powered future.

You will work on a variety of projects, from modelling new connections to analysing how renewable gas and hydrogen will fit into the system. One day you could be investigating pressure issues on the network; on the next, running models to test the impact of connecting new green energy sources. You will also play a key part in supporting our ambitious East Coast Hydrogen (ECH) project, which will transform the way energy is delivered across the region.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities
  • Asset Integrity at the Core: technically analyse, model, and engineer assessment of our gas network to uphold the highest standards of asset integrity and operational safety.
  • Model complex gas networks: apply advanced engineering tools (Falcon, Synergi, PRISM) to simulate, stress‑test, and optimise the network under a variety of scenarios, including the integration of hydrogen and biomethane.
  • Assess the impact of exit and entry connections, including hydrogen and biomethane, to integrate sustainable technologies and support the delivery of future energy initiatives.
  • Resolve real‑time operational challenges: investigate pressure issues and operational incidents, diagnose root causes, and implement robust, sustainable solutions in response to technical queries.
  • Engineering compliance and best practice: ensure all network planning and operational activities are aligned with internal engineering standards and external regulations, and contribute to the continuous improvement of technical documentation and procedures.
  • Cross‑disciplinary engineering collaboration: work closely with engineering teams, capital projects, and future energy teams to deliver multidisciplinary solutions that protect and enhance our infrastructure.
What We Are Looking For
  • A strong engineering background, either through a degree in engineering or a technical discipline, or through relevant engineering experience.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to convey engineering concepts clearly and effectively.
  • Strong numerical and mathematical ability, with a logical approach to problem‑solving.
  • A team‑player mindset, with confidence to work independently when required.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to work accurately to tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Full UK driving licence required for operational site visits and collaboration with other NGN teams.
Desirable

Understanding of asset integrity and gas network engineering, experience with modelling tools (Falcon, Synergi, PRISM), or a demonstrable aptitude for technical systems.

Application Notes

We welcome applications from candidates who do not hold a degree, provided you can demonstrate relevant experience in the appropriate engineering or technical fields. We encourage early applications, as the vacancy may close before the advertised deadline once we have received enough suitable candidates.

Salary and Benefits
  • Salary from £35,738 per annum.
  • Up to 10% bonus per annum.
  • 25 days annual leave (plus recognised bank holidays and 2 half days over the Christmas period).
  • SSP for the first 2 calendar days, then occupational sick pay.
  • Generous stakeholder 5/10 pension scheme.
  • Flexible benefits and salary sacrifice options – discounts on UK attractions, gym memberships, restaurant discounts, experience days, and more.
  • Family‑friendly policies: 6 weeks paternity leave (eligible employees), 6 months’ full pay for maternity leave (eligible employees), shared parental leave, and additional benefits.
