Job Summary

The Neonatal Unit is looking for highly motivated, enthusiastic individuals to join our friendly neonatal team. This vacancy is open to RNC's and RN's with at least 6 months post‑grad qualification who are looking for a new challenge or a change in direction within their career. As a Band 5 Staff Nurse you will be well supported to further enhance your clinical knowledge and expertise and progress towards the Neonatal Qualified in Speciality Intensive/High Dependency Course.

Responsibilities
  • Provide holistic care for the sick neonate and their family who may require neonatal high‑dependency and/or special care.
  • Assess care needs in conjunction with medical and specialist staff, ensuring family‑centred care in partnership with parents/carers.
  • Plan and implement individual programmes of neonatal care, meeting physical, social, psychological and spiritual needs.
  • Act at all times in accordance with the NMC Codes of Conduct and Practice.
  • Maintain safe practice, concentrating for long periods and dealing with distressing circumstances.
  • Observe and help assess parents’ needs and provide appropriate education.
  • Communicate and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, assisting others as required.
  • Recognise child protection issues and refer to appropriate agencies following consultation with the nurse in charge.
  • Provide continuity of care for allocated patients with support from senior staff where required.
  • Deal with complaints in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Become competent in equipment appropriate to caring for Special Care and High Dependency neonates.
  • Undertake extended role programmes such as the Foundation course, Neonatal High Dependency and Intensive Care course, and other allocated extended roles (Infection Control, Cleft Lip and Palate, Palliative Care, Safeguarding, Blood Transfusion, Developmental Care, Breastfeeding, Family Integrated Care).
  • Participate in the Trust’s appraisal system (Personal Review & Development Plan – PRDP).
Education, Research & Management
  • Complete a year’s period of preceptorship.
  • Provide a positive learning environment for student nurses, apprentices and trainee assistant practitioners.
  • Support colleagues and students, participating in teaching and assessment as required.
  • Maintain professional development, attending mandatory study days and external days when allocated.
  • Engage in research, audit and quality improvement initiatives, ensuring evidence‑based practice.
  • Utilise resources economically and effectively.
  • Supervise other staff as delegated, aiding their development.
  • Anticipate and identify conflicts or problem areas, referring to senior staff as necessary.
  • Coordinate ward activities with support from colleagues.
  • Stay informed about Shared Governance within the Trust.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in work patterns to maintain a safe environment.
Statutory & Miscellaneous
  • Ensure nursing registration is up to date and report any lapse to line management.
  • Undergo CRB disclosure check as required for access to children and vulnerable adults.
  • Maintain own vaccinations/Hepatitis B immunity.
  • Safeguard patient confidentiality and comply with the Data Protection Act.
  • Attend statutory refresher courses as needed.
  • Observe all Trust policies, including the Equal Opportunities Policy and risk minimisation procedures.
  • Perform duties to the highest standard and undertake any additional duties commensurate with the grade.
