Multiskilled Engineering Technician – Mars Petcare

Location: Castle Cary

Salary: £40,000-£46,000 (32 hours per week prorated and including shift allowance, DOE) + £2,500 welcome bonus, performance bonus & exceptional benefits

Hours: 32 hours per week (with choice of additional hours)

The Role

Dynamic Engineering Team at Mars Petcare factory. Hands‑on maintenance for specialised pet food processing & packaging equipment, mechanical & electrical challenges. Problem solve & repair technical faults to keep production targets in a safe, food‑safe manner.

Collaborate with shift maintenance engineers, shift operations, and days engineers to maintain and improve future factory performance and asset reliability. Involved in longer‑term improvements & projects to improve reliability on assets, maintenance schedule, or strategy.

Shift Pattern

32 hours per week (with choice of additional hours)

  • Weekend – 2x shifts: Saturday & Sunday alternating weekly between nights 10pm‑10am & days 10am‑10pm
  • Weekday – 1x shift: Mon‑Fri 8am‑4pm/6am‑2pm
What We're Looking For
  • Solid foundation in Engineering & Technical skills, built through a recognised apprenticeship.
  • Standard level 4 (or relevant level 3) or HNC / HND level in combined Electrical & Mechanical Engineering discipline, or Electrical or Mechanical Engineering qualification with other qualifications / proven experience in the other discipline.
  • Self‑sufficient, hands on, strong problem‑solving ability, systematic root cause analysis of technical issues.
  • Demonstrable experience working in a maintenance or reliability department.
  • Industry Health & Safety knowledge (e.g. LOTO, Risk Assessments & Safe Work Permits).
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform fault diagnosis & repairs on random failures on production machinery, identifying the root cause in the repair process.
  • Responsibility for technical safety and food safety standards on shift, supporting the Shift Operations Manager.
  • Provide technical experience and support to the Shift Operations Team.
  • Responsible for overseeing all factory services on shift (steam, electricity, air, water, gas).
  • Determine when and which technical issues are escalated to the days team.
  • Complete planned maintenance activities & improvements with smooth transitions from maintenance back to production.
