Multi‑Skilled Maintenance Engineer
Location: Chelmsford – Salary: £43,000 - £47,000 – Afternoon shift (5 out of 7). Are you a hands‑on Maintenance Engineer with solid mechanical and electrical expertise? Looking for a fast‑paced environment where no two days are the same? We're supporting our client in their search for a Multi‑Skilled Maintenance Engineer to join their growing team. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in keeping mission‑critical equipment running smoothly.

The Opportunity

As part of a tight‑knit engineering team, you'll ensure production equipment operates safely, reliably, and efficiently. You'll get involved in planned and reactive maintenance across a wide variety of plant equipment and automation systems, working collaboratively with production teams to minimise downtime.

This position will suit someone with a strong fault‑finding mindset, confident working across both electrical and mechanical challenges.

Key Responsibilities

You’ll be working across:

  • Fully automated conveying equipment, dryers and presses
  • Gearboxes, pumps, drive motors
  • Pneumatic & hydraulic systems
  • Boilers, steam traps, condensate recovery systems

Core duties include:

  • Diagnosing and repairing faults on electro‑mechanical and PLC‑controlled systems
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives
  • Maintaining compliance with Health & Safety processes
  • Collaborating with production teams to reduce downtime
  • Accurately logging maintenance activities and updates
What We’re Looking For
  • Proven experience in mechanical/electrical maintenance within high‑volume production (FMCG, food manufacturing, process industries, or similar)
  • Strong fault‑finding capability across motors, sensors, inverters, PLCs
  • Confidence working with pneumatics, hydraulics, steam systems, and condensate management
  • Solid knowledge of power transmission – bearings, shafts, couplings, drive assemblies
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, P&IDs
  • A safety‑first approach and strong teamwork skills
Qualifications
  • Apprentice‑trained or qualified Maintenance Engineer
  • NVQ Level 3, ONC, HNC (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering
  • Confidence interpreting technical diagrams and control schematics
