Overview

Winchester College seeks an experienced and competent Multi‑Skilled Carpenter to join the Works Department. The role is vital for maintaining, improving and altering the College’s extraordinary range of buildings—from 14th‑century chapels and classrooms to modern laboratories and over 100 staff houses.

Key Responsibilities
  • Core Carpentry Duties: carry out all aspects of carpentry work in maintenance, improvement and alteration of the College’s varied building stock.
  • Reactive Work: predominantly carry out reactive maintenance covering the whole building stock.
  • Specific Repairs: undertake repairs to doors (including fire door repairs and upgrades), sash and casement windows, flooring, kitchens and mouldings.
  • Multi‑Skilled Responsibilities: maintain at least two additional trade skills to an intermediate level.
  • Plastering: complete patch repairs or skimming.
  • Plumbing: install kitchen appliances, bathroom suites and perform small heating repairs.
  • Bricklaying: undertake repointing and small bricklaying tasks.
  • Ceramic Tiling: tile kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Operational Requirements: work under all weather conditions and at heights; respond to occasional out of hours emergency call‑outs (paid at overtime rate).
Essential Qualifications
  • Core competency: experienced, competent carpenter & joiner with an eye for detail.
  • Multi‑Skilled: competent and experienced in a range of trades (plastering, plumbing, bricklaying, ceramic tiling).
  • Experience with historic buildings: some experience of working in historic buildings is essential; particular experience with listed buildings and traditional skills is an advantage.
  • Ability to work unsupervised and as part of a team.
