Motor Underwriter – Stafford, Hybrid Working
Due to internal promotion, we are looking for a Motor Underwriter to join our well established, fast‑paced SME motor team based in Stafford.

The role involves underwriting complex new business and providing specialist advice across our SME Motor portfolio. You’ll be responsible for building and maintaining broker relationships, applying technical expertise, contributing to business results, and coaching and mentoring Assistant Underwriters.
Your role
- Underwrite new business in accordance with the business plan, within set underwriting guidelines and service standards, and according to your individual earned or delegated authority.
- Use product line expertise to analyse prospects and recommend profitable risk selection.
- Manage key broker portfolios and accounts.
- Establish, strengthen, and develop relationships with stakeholders to maximise influence and achieve business objectives.
- Lead profitability and process improvement initiatives by informing senior leaders of best practices and guiding strategic plans.
- Maintain in‑depth knowledge of current legislation, best practice, underwriting systems, products and organisational guidelines.
- Actively manage your portfolio and relationships with brokers and colleagues to achieve portfolio retention, growth and profitability targets.
- Coach and mentor Underwriters and Assistant Underwriters; supervise work and ensure procedures and authorities are adhered to.
- Having the right to work in the UK is a requirement for this role. QBE may consider sponsorship at its discretion.
About you
- Experience underwriting commercial Motor business, ideally with a good network of broker contacts.
- Understanding of market dynamics and trends.
- Good relationship management through interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to influence and negotiate.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks for maximum outcome.
- An open mindset that will allow you to innovate and adapt your approach to deliver customer‑focused solutions.
- Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements.
