A leading dermatology clinic in Cheadle is seeking a Mohs Surgery Laboratory Technician to support the dermatology team. Responsibilities include preparing tissue specimens, maintaining documentation, operating laboratory equipment, and ensuring high standards of infection control. Ideal candidates will have laboratory experience, particularly in Mohs surgery or histology. This position offers a flexible contract with competitive daily rates.

Qualifications

The Dermatology Partnership (Everything Skin Clinic – Cheadle)

Location: Hawbank House, High Street, Cheadle, SK8 1AL

Contract Type: Bank

Hours: Friday and Saturday from 8:00am until completion

Salary: £150 for a half day (4 cases or fewer) and £320 for a full day (5 cases or more)

How you’ll help us make health happen

We are looking for a detail‑oriented and skilled Mohs Surgery Laboratory Technician to join our team at the Cheadle clinic. In this role, you will play a vital part in supporting our dermatology team during Mohs micrographic surgery by preparing, processing, and staining tissue specimens. Your work will directly support the Mohs surgeon in evaluating surgical margins during skin cancer removal procedures.

You’ll be responsible for maintaining accurate documentation, ensuring specimen traceability, and upholding the highest standards of infection control and clinical governance. You’ll also manage laboratory equipment, particularly the cryostat, and assist with stock control and safe handling of chemicals and biological materials. This role also involves supporting the wider surgical team when needed and participating in audits, training, and quality control processes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare, process, and stain tissue specimens for Mohs surgery
  • Maintain clear documentation and specimen traceability
  • Communicate effectively with the Mohs surgeon regarding sectioning and orientation
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, especially the cryostat
  • Follow infection control protocols and clinical governance standards
  • Manage stock and supplies for the laboratory
  • Ensure safe handling and disposal of chemicals and biological materials
  • Support the surgical team and participate in audits and training
Key Skills / Qualifications needed for this role:
Essential:
  • B​​​​​Experience in Mohs surgery laboratory work
  • B​​​​​Experience processing samples for MHOS surgery
  • B​​​​​Experience of using aCryostat
  • Previous laboratory experience (ideally in histology or surgical settings)
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure in a surgical environment
  • Understanding of clinical hygiene, health & safety, and data protection
Desirable:
  • Qualification in biomedical science or histology (e.g. IBMS diploma or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with dermatological procedures and skin cancer pathology
  • Knowledge of COSHH and HTA guidelines
