MOD Dentist

The Defence Primary Healthcare (DPHC), based at HMS Nelson, Portsmouth, is looking for a MOD Dentist. This is a full‑time position offering 37 hours per week; part‑time or flexible working arrangements will be considered in line with business needs and salary will be pro‑rata accordingly.

Main duties of the job

As the successful post holder you will line‑manage a Civilian Dental Hygienist and Civilian Dental Nurses, complete their mid‑ and end‑of‑year reports, approve annual leave and other administrative duties to support staff within the department while also providing dental care to Service personnel.

You will spend about 2 hours per week on non‑clinical activities such as practice meetings, training and personal administration. The remaining contracted hours will be used to deliver clinical outputs and to focus on improving and maintaining the dental health and operational fitness of the personnel you support.

Job responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities for the role include but are not limited to:

  • Inspecting all personnel you are responsible for at intervals in accordance with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines and providing follow‑up treatment as required.
  • Providing an occupational oral health assessment, being fully conversant with NATO Dental Fitness categorisation and dental input into the Joint Medical Employment Standard for Service personnel.
  • Ensuring contemporaneous notes are recorded on individuals in the integrated electronic healthcare records for all episodes of care.
  • Ensuring that surgery management, documentation including consumable stores, the safe custody of personal sensitive data and the maintenance of equipment are kept to a high standard at all times.
  • Onward referral of personnel to enhanced practitioners, specialists or consultants for treatment as appropriate.

Qualifications
  • Fully registered with the General Dental Council without conditions.
  • Either completed Foundation Dentist Training (or qualified before foundation training became compulsory in the NHS) or have evidence of at least 24 months full‑time postgraduate clinical experience in a primary dental care setting.
Experience
  • Applicants must maintain evidence of clinical currency, specifically a minimum of two clinical sessions per week over the last 15 months.

Additional Information

The sift will be completed within 10 working days of the vacancy closing date. Interviews will be held on a date to be confirmed and no reimbursement will be provided for travel expenses. All employees new to the Civil Service will be subject to a 6‑month probation period unless otherwise advised.
