MOD Dentist

The Defence Primary Healthcare (DPHC), based at HMS Nelson, Portsmouth, is recruiting a full‑time dentist (37 hours per week). Requests for flexible or part‑time work will be considered based on business needs. The closing date is 05 January 2026.

Main duties of the job

You will line‑manage a Civilian Dental Hygienist and Civilian Dental Nurses, complete their mid‑ and end‑of‑year reports, approve annual leave, and perform other administrative duties to support staff while delivering dental care to Service personnel.

Spend 2 hours per week on non‑clinical activities such as practice meetings and training; the remaining hours will focus on clinical care and maintaining the dental health and operational fitness of the personnel you oversee.

Job responsibilities
  • Inspect personnel at intervals in accordance with NICE guidelines and provide follow‑up treatment as required.
  • Provide occupational oral health assessments and develop dental fitness categorisation in line with NATO standards and the Joint Medical Employment Standard.
  • Record contemporaneous notes in the electronic health record for all episodes of care.
  • Maintain surgical area management, documentation, consumable stores, data safety, and equipment standards.
  • Refer personnel to enhanced practitioners, specialists, or consultants for specialist treatment when appropriate.

Additional Information

Security checks (Security Check level) are required. Evidence of Hepatitis B serology will be requested; vaccination alone is insufficient. The post does not offer relocation expenses. Qualifications
  • Fully registered with the General Dental Council without conditions.
  • Completed Foundation Dentist Training or qualified prior to its introduction.
  • Alternatively, have at least 24 months of full‑time postgraduate clinical experience in a primary care setting or qualified before the introduction of compulsory training.
Experience
  • Maintain clinical currency with a minimum of 2 sessions per week over the last 15 months.
