Job summary

The RAC is recruiting a Mobile Vehicle Technician for its SMR division in the Norwich area. You will work on a fully planned schedule, performing servicing, diagnostics, repairs and safety checks on members’ vehicles, with no emergency callouts and a clear progression path.

We offer a base salary of £40,170 with the potential to earn up to £52,000 through bonuses and overtime, plus benefits such as guaranteed overtime options, pension, and flexible working arrangements.

Qualifications

• NVQ Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance (or equivalent) with 2+ years’ experience
• 5+ years’ experience as a Vehicle Technician/Mechanic
• A full UK driving licence with fewer than 6 points

Responsibilities

• Pre-booked, scheduled jobs on member’s schedule; no reactive callouts.
• Carry out routine servicing and diagnostics using mobile equipment.
• Perform in-depth repairs you’d normally complete in a workshop.
• Provide member advice and recommendations based on inspection.
• Vehicle safety checks aligned to RAC standards.

40 hours per week, with core hours from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, and 1 in 4 Saturdays.

Where you’ll work You’ll be part of the Norwich cluster, covering areas like Norwich, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Aylsham, Wymondham, Beccles. You’ll be out on the road in your local area, working through a clearly planned schedule of appointments - no reactive callouts, just organised, pre‑booked work where you can focus on doing the job properly.

The RAC is known for roadside rescue - but this isn’t that.

Our Service, Maintenance & Repair (SMR) division is a newer, fast-growing part of the RAC, built to deliver planned, structured repair and servicing directly to members - from their driveway to their workplace car park.

There are no emergency callouts, no unpredictable shift patterns and no roadside recoveries. Instead, you’ll work through a scheduled list of jobs, with the time, tools and support you need to do quality work.

What to expect

Your day starts with a clear digital schedule. Each job is pre‑booked, with the member expecting you. You’ll carry out:

• Routine servicing
• Diagnostics using advanced mobile equipment
• In‑depth repairs you’d normally complete in a workshop
• Member advice and recommendations based on your inspection
• Vehicle safety checks aligned to RAC standards

And because SMR is structured, you’re not reacting to breakdowns - you’re delivering planned work that you can prepare for.

From day one, you’ll have everything you need: a fully equipped RAC van, fuel card, uniform, full tool set and advanced diagnostics. You’ll use your technical skill and problem‑solving ability to get people moving again; safely, quickly and confidently.

What you’ll need...

Either:

NVQ Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance (or equivalent) with 2+ years’ experience

or

5+ years’ experience as a Vehicle Technician/Mechanic

and

A full UK driving licence with fewer than 6 points
