Job summary

The RAC is recruiting a Mobile Vehicle Technician for its SMR division in Cambridge. You’ll work on pre-booked jobs using a fully equipped RAC van, with a 40-hour week and occasional Saturdays. Base salary is £40,170, and OTE can reach up to £52,000 with bonuses and overtime.

There are no emergency callouts; you’ll undertake routine servicing, diagnostics and in-depth repairs, following a clearly planned schedule. You’ll have the tools, support and time to do quality work from day one.

Qualifications

• Experience as a Vehicle Technician/Mechanic is essential.
• Full UK driving licence with fewer than points is required.
• NVQ Level 2 in Light Vehicle Maintenance (or equivalent) is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Carry out routine servicing, diagnostics and in-depth repairs.
• Provide member advice and recommendations based on inspection.
• Work from a clearly planned schedule of pre-booked appointments.

You’ll be part of the Cambridge cluster, covering areas like Cambridge, Ely, Newmarket, Royston, Saffron Walden. You’ll be out on the road in your local area, working through a clearly planned schedule of appointments - no reactive callouts, just organised, pre‑booked work where you can focus on doing the job properly.

Our Service, Maintenance & Repair (SMR) division is a newer, fast-growing part of the RAC, built to deliver planned, structured repair and servicing directly to members - from their driveway to their workplace car park.

There are no emergency callouts, no unpredictable shift patterns and no roadside recoveries. Instead, you’ll work through a scheduled list of jobs, with the time, tools and support you need to do quality work.

From day one, you’ll have everything you need: a fully equipped RAC van, fuelcard, uniform, full tool set and advanced diagnostics. You’ll use your technical skill and problem‑solving ability to get people moving again; safely, quickly and confidently.

Your day starts with a clear digital schedule. Each job is pre‑booked, with the member expecting you. You’ll carry out:

• Routine servicing
• Diagnostics using advanced mobile equipment
• In‑depth repairs you’d normally complete in a workshop
• Member advice and recommendations based on your inspection
• Vehicle safety checks aligned to RAC standards

What you’ll need...

Either:

• NVQ Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance (or equivalent) with 2+ years’ experience
• 5+ years’ experience as a Vehicle Technician/Mechanic
• A full UK driving licence with fewer than 6 points
