Job summary

RAC is recruiting a Mobile Mechanic to join the SMR division, delivering planned servicing and diagnostics at members’ driveways and workplaces across Stevenage, Hitchin, Letchworth Garden City and nearby areas. You’ll operate a fully equipped RAC van with support for parts ordering and scheduling.

The role emphasises independence, problem solving and real variety, with a clear digital schedule and a focus on quality work rather than reactive callouts.

Qualifications

• NVQ Level 2 in Light Vehicle Maintenance or equivalent.
• 2+ years’ experience or 5+ years as a Vehicle Technician/Mechanic.
• Full UK driving licence with fewer than 6 points.

Responsibilities

• Carry out routine servicing.
• Perform diagnostics with advanced mobile equipment.
• Complete in-depth repairs normally done in a workshop.
• Provide member advice and recommendations after inspection.
• Conduct vehicle safety checks per RAC standards.
• Work on pre-booked appointments with planned schedule.

Job description

There are no emergency callouts, no unpredictable shift patterns and no roadside recoveries. Instead, you'll work through a scheduled list of jobs, with the time, tools and support you need to do quality work. Where you'll work You'll be part of the Stevenage cluster, covering areas like Stevenage, Hitchin, Letchworth Garden City, Welwyn Garden City, Hertford. You'll be out on the road in your local area, working through a clearly planned schedule of appointments - no reactive callouts, just organised, pre-booked work where you can focus on doing the job properly. What to expect Your day starts with a clear digital schedule. Each job is pre-booked, with the member expecting you. You'll carry out: - Routine servicing - Diagnostics using advanced mobile equipment - In-depth repairs you'd normally complete in a workshop - Member advice and recommendations based on your inspection - Vehicle safety checks aligned to RAC standards And because SMR is structured, you're not reacting to breakdowns - you're delivering planned work that you can prepare for. From day one, you'll have everything you need: a fully equipped RAC van, fuel card, uniform, full tool set and advanced diagnostics. You'll use your technical skill and problem-solving ability to get people moving again; safely, quickly and confidently. • A competitive base salary of £40,178, with on-target earnings of up to £52,000
