Job summary

A leading infrastructure solutions provider is seeking a Mobile Plant Fitter to support overhead line wiring projects across the UK. This site-based role involves servicing and maintaining large plant equipment and requires flexibility to live near projects. About the role

Join Balfour Beatty Asset & Technology Solutions as a Mobile Plant Fitter, supporting overhead line (OHL) wiring operational projects at various sites across the UK.

This predominantly site-based role requires flexibility to live near projects (typically in your own caravan) and follow a working pattern of 11 days on, 3 days off. When not on site, you'll work from our large plant workshop in Derby.

You'll play a key part in ensuring our large plant and specialist equipment is serviced, maintained, and repaired to the highest standards, maximising equipment availability for our clients.

What you'll be doing

Your responsibilities will be as follows:

  • Service, maintain, and repair OHL plant and specialist equipment, ensuring compliance with legislation and manufacturer requirements.
  • Work both independently and as part of a team, supporting others in maintenance tasks.
  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance across a variety of plant and equipment.
  • Maintain tidy and safe work areas, adhering to health, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Complete all documentation and electronic records accurately and promptly.
  • Manage spare parts stock, including booking out and requesting parts as needed.
  • Deliver customer requirements, including breakdown response, in line with agreed service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Undertake relevant training and additional tasks as required.
  • Work regular paid overtime, including weekdays and weekends.
  • Liaise with internal teams (Transport, Goods In/Out, Stock Controllers, Management) and external contacts (Customers, Supply Chain, LOLER inspection providers).
Who we're looking for
Essential qualities and experience
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure in a busy site environment.
  • Experience servicing and maintaining large diesel‑driven plant, including hydraulics and electrical systems.
  • Ability to read hydraulic schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Recognised mechanical/electrical qualification or completed plant apprenticeship.
  • Computer literate, able to use Microsoft Office.
  • Skilled in fault finding and diagnostics on large diesel‑driven plant.
  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Strong team player with effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and live away from home (11 days on, 3 days off).
Desirable qualities and experience
  • Maintenance experience with specialist plant used in the OHL wiring industry.
  • Valid forklift and telehandler operator's certificate.
  • Welding qualification.
  • Safety qualification (e.g., IOSH) or willingness to work towards one.
  • EUSR SHEA power qualification.
