Role Overview

The Mobile Mechanical & Electrical Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, effective, and compliant delivery of engineering services across a diverse Defence estate. Operating autonomously across multiple sites and a wide geographic area, this position is responsible for implementing and administering the MOD safe system of work, acting as an Appointed Person for relevant technical disciplines including electrical, HVAC, and water systems.

In this position, the engineer takes responsibility for the practical implementation and ongoing operation of JSP 375, ensuring safe systems of work are followed rigorously. They maintain oversight of all activity within their area of responsibility to ensure compliance with MOD safety standards and assess the competence of Skilled Persons to ensure only suitably qualified and experienced operatives are appointed. They are accountable for issuing work permits, developing comprehensive risk assessments and method statements, creating safety programmes, and ensuring the safe execution of technical activities.

As a key technical authority, the role includes providing robust advice and support to internal teams, supply chain partners, Defence Infrastructure Organisation representatives, and end users. The engineer contributes to technical planning, supports project delivery, and works closely with Billable Works teams to ensure new installations and maintenance work meet required standards. They take active ownership of identifying equipment defects, contributing to risk meetings, reviewing site risk registers, and reducing corrective actions within required timeframes.

The position demands strong collaboration with Senior Engineers and operational stakeholders to drive safe working practices, support professional development, and contribute to continuous improvement in safety, compliance, and technical delivery. The engineer develops and executes personal training and competency plans, ensuring they remain fully familiar with all relevant systems, equipment, and processes across multiple sites.

A key responsibility of the role is to ensure the application of safe systems of work aligns with MOD expectations, advising management on any deficiencies and contributing to process improvements and carbon reduction initiatives aligned with Defence sustainability targets. The engineer works closely with colleagues across VIVO to ensure consistent application of JSP 375 requirements, supports the Helpdesk with technical enquiries, and provides coaching and supervision to Skilled Persons, including arranging training and managing competency‑related actions where required.

The role requires attendance at stakeholder meetings, maintaining close working relationships with site teams and end users, and supporting estate activities through informed, proactive technical advice. Above all, this position demands a highly responsible professional who upholds rigorous operational standards, prioritises safety and compliance, delivers technical excellence, and plays an active role in strengthening the reliability, efficiency, and compliance of estate engineering operations.

This is a mobile role and you will cover a region from the Scottish border down to Lincolnshire. Candidates must be willing and able to commit to the travel required for this role.

What You'll Bring

This role requires a highly disciplined professional with the ability to work independently, demonstrating initiative and technical authority while maintaining the highest standards of safety and statutory compliance. With a full driving licence and flexibility to travel, participate in on‑call rota duties, and undertake overtime when required, the engineer provides responsive, expert support across the region.

You should be a fully qualified Electrical Engineer and ideally hold AP tickets in Electrical or Mechanical, but this is not essential as we are prepared to put the successful candidate through all AP tickets if necessary.

You should have significant practical experience with Safe Systems of Work, particularly in the management and operational delivery of JSP375. You should be confident in problem‑solving, decision‑making, and working independently across multiple sites. Experience in supervising site operations, resource management, and staff leadership is essential.

What We Offer
  • 6% employee matched pension contribution
  • 25 days annual leave
  • Company car/car allowance
  • Single private medical cover
  • Upskilling and training (AP tickets, Electrical and Mechanical)
