Job summary

Scrumconnect Consulting, a multi-award-winning digital consultancy, seeks an MLOps Engineer to drive the production-grade ML/AI backbone across a central government department's multi-cloud, legacy-integrated environment.

You will own the pipeline, infrastructure, and monitoring, collaborating in a Rainbow Team with civil servants to translate platform decisions into reproducible, auditable infrastructure. This role requires BPSS clearance and hybrid working from Newcastle upon Tyne.

Qualifications

• Strong DevOps background extended into ML/AI-specific tooling (model registries, feature stores, experiment tracking).
• Infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD pipeline design and build experience.
• Experience with observability and monitoring for production systems at scale.
• Understanding of containerisation and orchestration for ML workloads.
• Comfortable working across multi-cloud, legacy-integrated environments.
• Secure-by-design engineering practices appropriate to sensitive public-sector data.

Responsibilities

• ML/AI Pipeline Engineering: Design CI/CD pipelines for ML/AI workloads including data versioning, training, testing, packaging and deployment.
• Production Reliability: Implement monitoring, logging, alerting, and automated rollback for AI services in production.
• Infrastructure-as-Code: Build reproducible, auditable infrastructure for AI workloads using IaC tooling for multi-cloud env.
• Model Governance in Operation: Implement registries, versioning, and lineage tracking for production models.
• Cost & Sustainability Optimisation: Right-size infrastructure and monitor resource usage to reduce footprint.

Overview

We're looking for an MLOps Engineer to build the operational backbone that lets models move safely and reliably from experimentation into production, at scale, across a central government department's multi-cloud, legacy-integrated environment. Where the MLEngineer trains models and the AI Engineer builds features on top of them, you own the pipeline, infrastructure, and monitoring that keeps everything running in production. You'll work inside a collaborative "Rainbow Team" alongside civil servants, translating the Architect's platform decisions into reproducible, auditable infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• ML/AI Pipeline Engineering Design CI/CD pipelines specific to ML/AI workloads, covering data versioning, training, testing, packaging, and deployment.
• Production Reliability Implement monitoring, logging, alerting, and automated rollback for AI services in production, tuned for the availability and sensitivity requirements of public-sector systems.
• Infrastructure-as-Code Build reproducible, auditable infrastructure for AI workloads — compute, storage, networking — using IaC tooling appropriate to the department's multi-cloud environment.
• Model Governance in Operation Implement model registries, versioning, and lineage tracking so every production model can be traced back to its training data, code, and evaluation results — directly supporting the programme's ATRS transparency obligations.
• Cost & Sustainability Optimisation Right-size infrastructure and monitor resource usage to keep the platform's footprint down, in line with the programme's Green AI and Net Zero Commitments.

Required Skills & Experience

Desirable Experience

• AWS / Azure / GCP infrastructure certifications
• Experience building MLOps platforms within regulated or public-sector environments
• Familiarity with model governance/traceability requirements such as ATRS
• Prior delivery within UK central government or the wider public sector

Location and Working Pattern

Hybrid, based from Newcastle upon Tyne, with on-site attendance required for workshops, knowledge-transfer sessions, and onboarding. All production system and data access must be performed solely from within the UK.
