Job Description:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated and organised individual to join the 18 Army Education Centre as a Military Library Clerk, responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Army Library and Information Centre at Merville Barracks, Colchester, CO2 7UT.
You will play a key role in supporting the Army Library and Information Service, ensuring that all users have access to high-quality resources, information, and support. This is a rewarding position at the heart of the military learning community, helping to promote reading, research, and lifelong learning among Service personnel.
Manage the daily running of the Army Library and Information Centre
Use theLibrary Management System to manage stock, add new members, issue and return materials, and track overdue items.
Liaise with Army Library and Education Centrestaff to recommend new materials relevant to users’ needs.
Process new stock and withdraw outdated materials as directed.
Maintain an orderly, welcoming, and professional library environment.
Conduct information searches using both digital and print resources.
Refer complex or specialist requests to the Services Central Library or other Army Librarybranches.
Manage user records in line with GDPR requirements.
Develop proactive outreach initiatives to increase membership and engagement with the library.
Deliver induction sessions and guidance on library services.
Plan and lead learning activities that promote research, reading, and information literacy skills.
Carry out first-line IT system administration, including updates and backups.
Ensure compliance with Army Library and Army IT policies, and data protection standards.
Promote the library through marketing and communications in line with Army Library and local Education Centre strategies.
Record and submit monthly usage statistics and quarterly management reports.
5 GCSEs (Grade C/4 or above) or NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration (or equivalent).
Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Experience in a customer-facing environment.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Friendly and proactive approach to engaging with the military community.
Previous experience in a library or information service environment.
ECDL/ITQ Level 2 qualification.
