The Portland Hospital for Women & Children in Central London is seeking a Midwifery Sister to lead the maternity team. You will oversee antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care, coordinate staff, and drive evidence-based practice in a private hospital setting.

You’ll bring 3+ years’ midwifery experience, NMC registration, and teaching/mentoring credentials. The role offers full-time hours, complex shifts, and a strong focus on governance and staff development.

Qualifications

• NMC registration as a midwife is required.
• Minimum 3 years’ practice as a midwife.

Full time:37.5 hours per week
Shifts: 12.5 hour shifts between Monday-Sunday (long days, nights & weekends)
Contract type: Temporary Contract to cover Maternity Leave until 31st October 2027

We have an exciting opportunity for a Midwifery Sister to join the Midwifery team at The Portland Hospital currently rated “Good” by the CQC.

As the only fully private maternity hospital in the UK, delivering over 1,500 babies a year, we place great importance on providing safe and high-quality care for expectant mothers. Both consultant-led and midwife-led maternity care is available, and our aim is to provide you with all the support you need during pregnancy, childbirth and beyond. Women’s health issues are treated by a team of 40 consultants, supported by nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and counsellors, with an emphasis on privacy and dignity.

As a Midwifery Sister, you will play a key leadership role in ensuring the safe, effective, and efficient management of the maternity department. You will provide expert clinical care across antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal services, while promoting evidence-based practice and continuous improvement. The role involves coordinating daily operations, offering guidance and support to the multidisciplinary team, and overseeing the care delivered by both registered and non-registered staff. In collaboration with the Maternity Matron and Women's Services Manager, you will contribute to clinical governance, risk management, and quality assurance, while supporting staff development and education.

What you’ll bring:
NMC Registered Midwife
Demonstrable knowledge and a minimum of 3 years’ experience practising as a Midwife
Teaching and mentoring experience with ENB 997 or equivalent
Basic Adult and Newborn Life Support
Safeguarding Level 3 training
Excellent understanding of clinical governance and experience with audits and action plans
