The MHST Team Lead will have several key roles within the team. They will offer supervision to trainee and qualified Education Mental Health Practitioners or Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners, who are part of workforce within CAMHS to deliver early intervention work, and some aspects of clinical service delivery, including direct psychological interventions and consultation to schools. Alongside supervision, the post holder’s caseload will include children and adolescents with mild moderate emotional and mental health difficulties and will deliver evidence-based 1:1 and group interventions. The post holder will develop relationships with designated mental health Leads in schools to help them develop approaches for mental health and wellbeing, while also being responsible for the operational oversight of a smaller sub-team within the MHST. The post holder will be joining three other MHST Team Leaders with lots of opportunities for peer support and career development, and working within a large multi-disciplinary team.

Applicants must have a core profession in relevant field such as Psychology, Mental Health Nurse, Social worker, Therapist and must be registered with UK relevant professional body. Training will be provided for applicants without formal supervision training. BABCP registered Senior Wellbeing Practitioners (SWP) with relevant clinical and supervisory experience will also be considered.

3. To be responsible for implementing a range of psychotherapeutic interventions for individuals, carers, families, and groups, including adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining several provisional hypotheses.

4. To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to clients’ formulation, understanding around their presentation, and support plan.

5. To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and where appropriate to provide advice to other professions on psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk management

6. To provide consistent and effective clinical supervision for the team.

7. To have operational oversight of a smaller sub-team within the MHST.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities


1. To provide specialist psychological assessments of clients referred to the team based upon the appropriate use, interpretation, and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client’s care, when and where appropriate.

2. To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a client’s mental health problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the client’s problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings.

3. To be responsible for implementing a range of psychotherapeutic interventions for individuals, carers, families, and groups, including adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining several provisional hypotheses.

4. To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options considering both theoretical and therapeutic models.

6. To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to clients’ formulation, understanding around their presentation, and support plan.

7. To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and where appropriate to provide advice to other professions on psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk management

8. To provide consistent and effective clinical supervision for the team.

Education & Qualification
  • The post holder must have a core profession and as a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist, Systemic Therapist or Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist
  • SWP qualification with suitable clinical and supervisory experience
  • Completion of CYP IAPT supervisors course
Experience & Knowledge
  • Candidates will need evidence working therapeutically/ clinically or consultatively within a CYP Education or Mental Health Setting with children and young people with mental health difficulties.
  • Previous experience of supervising clinicians
  • Experience working with CBT informed interventions
Skills And Abilities
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups
  • Ability to contain, explore and formulate an understanding of high levels of distress, both directly with patients and indirectly via supervision of other staff.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies with children, young people and families
  • Ability to undertake clinical risk assessment and to work within safeguarding procedures
  • Skills in undertaking Quality Improvement projects and service evaluation
  • Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings
