Job summary

UK Atomic Energy Authority at Culham is seeking a Metrology Engineer to support the Metrology & Inspection Section across major fusion engineering programmes. You will provide specialist measurement and inspection expertise, ensuring high-quality alignment and capability for complex systems.

You’ll maintain procedures, calibration, and equipment, plan safe work with risk assessments, and help develop apprentices and graduates through technical mentoring and allocated work.

Qualifications

  • HNC or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • EngTech status or progression towards professional registration.
  • Significant metrology, instrumentation and inspection expertise with drawings, tolerances and specs.
  • Experience with 2D/3D measurement and large-scale measurement techniques.
  • Experience with CAD, CAM and CMM systems and metrology software.

Responsibilities

  • Provide metrology and inspection expertise across facilities.
  • Maintain inspection and measurement procedures, systems, software and hardware.
  • Ensure measurement equipment is calibrated and compliant with standards.
  • Plan and deliver work safely with risk assessments and safe systems of work.
  • Maintain asset information for effective planned maintenance.
  • Develop apprentices and graduates through technical training and mentoring.

About the job

As Metrology Engineer,you’llwork alongside the Section Leader toassistwith the day to day running of theMetrology & Inspection Section, providing specialist measurement and inspectionexpertiseacross major fusion engineering programmes and facilities.You’llassistthe team and ensuring high-quality inspection, alignment and measurement capability supports the manufacture,installationand operation of complex engineering systems.

What You’ll be Doing

  • Help to provide technicalexpertiseon metrology and inspection across facilities including MAST, HEAT, MRF, STEP,RACEand legacy JET equipment.
  • Maintain inspection, alignment and metrology procedures, systems,softwareand hardware.
  • Ensure measurement and inspection equipment ismaintainedand appropriately calibrated.
  • Ensure inspected and tested equipmentcomplies withrelevant legislation,standardsand codes of practice.
  • Plan and deliver work safely, includingappropriate riskassessments, methodstatementsand safe systems of work.
  • Maintainaccurateasset information to support effective planned preventative maintenance.
  • Help with developingapprentices, graduates and other team members through technical training,mentoringandappropriate workallocation.

What You’ll Bring

  • A minimum HNC or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, or significant demonstrable relevant line management experience.
  • Engineering Technician (EngTech) status or progress towards professional registration, with the ambition to progress towards IEng through IMechE or equivalent.
  • Significant metrology,instrumentationand inspectionexpertise, including experience using engineering drawings,tolerancesand specifications.
  • Experience of 2D and 3D measurement and analysis, including large-scale measurement using laser trackers, theodolites,photogrammetryor 3D laser scanning.
  • Experience with relevant CAD, CAM and CMM systems and specialist metrology software.
  • Experience developing and working with safe systems of work, methodstatementsand risk assessments for complex or potentially hazardous engineering activities.
