Job summary

UK Atomic Energy Authority is seeking a Metrology Engineer at Culham to provide specialist measurement and inspection expertise across fusion engineering programmes. You will maintain metrology procedures, ensure calibration, and support project delivery from MAST to JET facilities.

You will develop personnel through mentoring, contribute to safety plans and help manage technical procurement and recruitment as part of a growing Metrology & Inspection team.

Qualifications

  • HNC or equivalent required.
  • EngTech status or progress towards IEng encouraged.
  • Strong metrology, inspection and instrumentation knowledge.
  • Experience with 2D/3D measurement including laser trackers and 3D scanning.
  • Familiar with CAD/CAM/CMM systems and metrology software.
  • Ability to develop safe working procedures and risk assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical metrology and inspection expertise across facilities (MAST, HEAT, MRF, STEP, RACE, JET).
  • Maintain inspection, alignment and metrology procedures, systems, software and hardware.
  • Ensure equipment is calibrated and compliant with standards.
  • Plan and deliver safe work with risk assessments and method statements.
  • Maintain accurate asset information for maintenance planning.
  • Support apprentices and graduates through training and allocations.
  • Assist with departmental planning, budgets and procurement.

About the job

As Metrology Engineer, you’ll work alongside the Section Leader to assist with the day to day running of the Metrology & Inspection Section, providing specialist measurement and inspection expertise across major fusion engineering programmes and facilities. You’ll assist the team and ensuring high-quality inspection, alignment and measurement capability supports the manufacture, installation and operation of complex engineering systems.

What You'll be Doing
  • Help to provide technical expertise on metrology and inspection across facilities including MAST, HEAT, MRF, STEP, RACE and legacy JET equipment.
  • Maintain inspection, alignment and metrology procedures, systems, software and hardware.
  • Ensure measurement and inspection equipment is maintained and appropriately calibrated.
  • Ensure inspected and tested equipment complies with relevant legislation, standards and codes of practice.
  • Plan and deliver work safely, including appropriate risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work.
  • Maintain accurate asset information to support effective planned preventative maintenance.
  • Help with developing apprentices, graduates and other team members through technical training, mentoring and appropriate work allocation.
  • Support departmental planning, budgets, technical procurement and recruitment.
What You'll Bring
  • A minimum HNC or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, or significant demonstrable relevant line management experience.
  • Engineering Technician (EngTech) status or progress towards professional registration, with the ambition to progress towards IEng through IMechE or equivalent.
  • Significant metrology, instrumentation and inspection expertise, including experience using engineering drawings, tolerances and specifications.
  • Experience of 2D and 3D measurement and analysis, including large-scale measurement using laser trackers, theodolites, photogrammetry or 3D laser scanning.
  • Experience with relevant CAD, CAM and CMM systems and specialist metrology software.
  • Experience developing and working with safe systems of work, method statements and risk assessments for complex or potentially hazardous engineering activities.
