Job summary

Wood Mackenzie in Edinburgh seeks a Research Associate to deliver industry-leading short-term demand and renewable forecasts using proprietary and public data. The role focuses on driving tools, presenting actionable research, and refining forecasting models within the Power Trading Analytics team.

The ideal candidate will have a meteorology/atmospheric science background, strong Excel skills, and an interest in electricity markets. This is an in-person role based in Edinburgh.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science required.
• Experience in Operational Meteorology is preferred but not required.
• Understanding of synoptic and mesoscale meteorology expected.
• Interest in electricity markets and renewables is a plus.
• Very strong Excel skills are required (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP).
• Knowledge of North American geography is helpful.
• Must be detail-oriented, able to work under tight deadlines.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Team player who is transparent and accountable.

Responsibilities

• Utilize models and tools to deliver power industry forecasts.
• Present research projects and advise on actions based on findings.
• Improve processes via automation or new tooling (VB/Python/R).
• Identify changes in weather models that influence power prices and communicate these to analysts and clients.
• Modify outputs from forecasting models for multiple power regions (days to two weeks).
• Advance proprietary demand modeling algorithms technically and intellectually.
• Produce daily written reports on forecasted electricity demand and renewables.
